The island use to be part of main land key west connected by a thin land bridge. Key west residents use to let their cows graze on the property. The land bridge was severed in the 1911 hurricane an it became an island about a mile off shore until in 1957, a land bridge was built out to it. There has been no development on the property. I currently keep my honey bees there but they are in the far east corner fenced off.
