Luxury yurt glamping near the Peak District where, from the tiny-toiletries to the family-sized hot tub, every single detail is covered

Mongolian yurts, a Finnish glamping hut and a location three miles from the heart of the British beer-brewing industry; there’s a pretty multi-cultural mix at Peake's Retreats in Staffordshire. And, like hops and malt, or yeast and barley, it’s a blend that works wonderfully well. From the bucket full of footballs, frizbees and outdoor toys, to the private hot tubs, this is a glamping site where every detail has been covered. On a starry night with the wood-burner roaring and the owls hooting from a nearby tree, there are very few places we would rather be.

Twelve miles south of the Peak District and three miles from busy Burton On Trent (once the brewing capital of the world and still home to a handful of breweries), Peake’s Retreats is a family-run glamping site with just three large luxury yurts. Each is big enough to comfortably sleep up to six. Inside, the super king-sized beds and singles come with all the bedding and towels you need, while modern, luxury shower rooms feature plush organic toiletries, hair-dryers and full-length mirrors.

The cosy Finnish barbecue hut (allowing you to toast steaks and marshmallows even in the dead of winter) and the well-equipped kitchen cabin add to the sense that this is glamping for the over-pampered holidaymaker but the place still very much has a connection with the great outdoors. Children are welcome to help affable owner Sarah collect the farm’s eggs and campfire cooking is encouraged with a log and kindling starter kit and a cooking trivet provided outside each yurt.

Beyond your yurt lies the local village of Anslow – home to an excellent tearoom and petting farm, as well as the nearest pub – while Alton Towers is just thirteen miles away. For most, however, it’s the drive north into the nearby Peak District that reaps the real rewards. Walking in the White Peak Area is a treat. Family ramblers should head to the National Trust's Ilam Park, a dog-friendly spot with gentle riverside walks and a popular tea-room overlooking the Italian gardens, while those looking for something more intrepid should start in the ash woods of Dovedale National Nature Reserve and climb up Thorpe Cloud hill. At 942-feet it’s no giant, but on a clear day you can see all the way back south to Anslow where your evening’s hot tub awaits.

Beaumont’s Hideaway yurt
We stayed at the beginning of August (arrived at 4pm). Everything was perfect, clean and welcoming. The yurt was lovely, the kids were so excited! There were loads of toys which kept them busy and we had lots of fun making an outdoor fire. Lots of lovely family time…only down side is that we had to leave. Sarah was lovely….accommodating our every need (most very last minute!). Everyone in our group (from 40-4) loved every minute! Can’t wait to return and hopefully with friends so we can take over the place xx

Potter's Lodge
We had a fantastic weekend staying in the potters lodge yurt. The yurt is fantastic and everything we could wish for wash provided. The location is lovely, we could hear the farm animals in the morning and the farm shop over the road is great for coffees and lunch. The owners could not of been more helpful. We will definitely be back next year with the kids as it would be ideal with young children.

Milne's Corner yurt + hot tub
We loved staying here. Our yurt was spacious and had everything we needed. We particularly liked having a grill and also a fire pit, which we toasted marshmallows on. The site is fantastic with lots of space, beautiful flowers and our kids loved the climbing frame and surprise toy shed. The host is warm and friendly and quick to respond. We loved our hot tub and the showers are immaculate. It’s well located to get to lots of attractions in the Peak District, so overall is a great place.

Good night sleep - comfortable beds, stayed in Milne’s yurt with it’s own hot tub - nice to arrive to a heated hot tub, a selection for cooked breakfast and eggs from the farm. Welcoming owners ensured that our son got to pick up eggs in the morning and we had enough food, logs, kindling, etc. Yurt was big, nicely set up. Everything was clean and well maintained. Did not worry about Covid-19 as plenty of cleaning products, hand sanitizers available everywhere on the site. Thank you, Sarah! Bathroom absolutely wonderful, new, fresh, clean with large shower cabin and good toiletries and hot water! Fluffy white towels provided along with crisp bedding. Finish bbq yurt - great cooking and socialising experience! Plenty of kids toys available to play with which was great for indoor and outdoor play. Things to be aware - the location is close to the road so you can hear it however it also means it is just opposite a church farm cafe which has playground for kids and farm animals to pet! Enjoyed our stay and experience - nice mix of outdoors and waking up to crisp mornings but still having home comforts.

Beaumont’s Hideaway yurt
Just returned from a 3 night stay here. Absolutely perfect if you love the camping experience but without the damp tent and air bed! Beautifully furnished yurts, extremely comfy beds, twinkling fairy lights around and kitted our with everything you could possibly need (we literally took our clothes, a few toiletries and a bit of food). Our bathroom was a short walk from the yurt, was modern, very clean and equipped with Neals Yard toiletries. The hot tub was amazing after a busy day out. Sarah was so attentive, anything we did need she sourced and nothing was too much trouble. Just across the road there is a farm shop selling fresh produce and take away cake and sandwiches. Just perfect...would definitely return!

Loacted 12 miles from the beautiful Peak District, Peake's Retreats is a family run business. Currently we have 3 x luxury yurts each with private hot tub, each yurt will have either a king size or superkingsize bed, along with daybeds and sofa beds making them suitable to sleep up to 6 people. Onsite facilities also include large Finnish BBQ hut, firepits, children's play area, cooking cabin, and luxury shower and toilet block with private bathrooms for each yurt. Each yurt is fully insulated and has it's own wood burning stove, making them perfect for use all year round. Our site is also home to The Loft holiday cottage with private hot tub which sleeps 2. Meaning in total the site can sleep up to 20 people with 6 in each yurt and 2 in The Loft.
Nearby attractions

Peake's Retreats is 12 miles from Ashbourne, an old market town that is considered the gateway to the Peak District. From here there are a wealth of good walks in the White Peak Area (the lower, southern half of the Peak District), including in the excellent Dovedale National Nature Reserve. The most popular route is to walk from National Trust-owned Ilam Park to the Stepping Stones which takes you right along the bank of the River Dove for most of the route. Those on two wheels, meanwhile can take to the Tissington trail – a well-known cycle trail and bridle path which runs from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay (13 miles; traffic free). In the opposite direction, it's four miles from Peake's Retreats to the brewing town of Burton Upon Trent, famous for Bass beer. Here you'll find The National Brewing Museum along with plenty of bars and restaurants and some well known high street shops. There are also some lovely walks around the river Trent. For families, it is a 5-minute drive from The National Forest Adventure Farm, a 30-minute drive to Alton Towers and a 40-minute drive to the Monkey Forest at Trentham, where you can also find a selection of boutique shops and have a wander around the beautiful gardens.

Food and drink

For you're first morning at the site a complimentary breakfast pack provided is given to you on arrival, including locally sourced sausages, bacon, beans, tomatoes, and free range eggs (vegetarian and other dietary options also available). It's a 20-minute walk or a two-minute drive down the road to The Bell Inn, a modern pub with large beer garden, but for something special it's worth the 15-minute drive to The Swan at Walton – a proper gastro pub with excellent cocktails and proclaiming itself "a permanent beer festival", owing to its wide range of real ales. The Bull in Repton is also excellent – a traditional Victorian ale inn with a creative gastro menu and wood-fired pizza oven. Or you can order one of the BBQ meat hampers available from Peake’s Retreats and sourced from local butchers.
