A small, quiet, eco-friendly campsite on a working sheep farm

You could say Wytch Wood Campsite has been over 50 years in the making. The farm has been home to the Newman family since the early 1960s but it's only recently they've opened their gates to campers. With a flock of over 500 breeding ewes, as well as a number of equestrian businesses operating from the yard, the place is still very much a working farm. But that's exactly what makes it so special. You can take a tour, buy fresh lamb for your barbecue and learn more about their environmental practices all within the space of a morning. Which still leaves time to explore the valley and drive to the beach in the afternoon.

Small and unobtrusive, the camping area is nestled in the edge of an ancient wood a short distance from the farm buildings. Each pitch comes with seating, a firepit and initial supply of logs and you can choose from a pitch in the dappled shade of the lofty Beech trees or pick a spot among the grasses of the open wildflower meadow. There's a good choice of camping habitats, certainly, but as far as facilities go things are still relatively paired back. There are composting loos (almost one per pitch), hot showers and taps that supply freshly filtered drinking water but don't expect a playground or electricity. That's not to say there aren't conscientious touches. Biodegradable shampoo and dish-washing liquid is provided to make sure that, along with the off-grid facilities, even the soaps you use have as little impact on the environment as possible.

If you want to explore beyond the campsite, there are plenty of footpaths that cross the farm, including some that are being developed specifically for Wytch Wood guests. A stroll to the top of the nearest hill offers stunning views of Somerset and Dorset, including views to the Pilsdon and Lewesdon Hills, while a walk south will link you up with the Liberty Trail, a long distance footpath that runs right down to Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast. In some ways its a route that follows the natural course of the campsite – the spring that supplies the water here is also a natural source of the River Axe, which ultimately wiggles it's way south through the countryside to the Jurassic Coast too.

One for animal lovers ❤️
We had a great stay at Wytch Wood. Elise was a helpful host, and the site was gorgeous. The showers were hot and clean, the compost loo was really clean and a welcome addition, much better than having to walk too far for a wee in the dark! Ours was a midweek stay for my partners birthday, so it was very quiet, just us and the sound of the baby lambs, the stream and the birds! But we'll definitely be back for a weekend visit as the activities look awesome. Thanks Elise and team for a great stay. We were also very excited to meet a toad, black cat and see some lovely horses!

Amazing!
So peaceful, miles from the nearest 2 way road & worthy of the title eco camping. Beautiful woods, spacious pitches w/ own compost loo (cleaned daily), excellent facilities & lots of extra thoughtful touches from games to hammocks. Super friendly, fab pizza, and an honesty system which underpinned the philosophy and feel of the site - welcome!

A slice of tranquility!
This is a little gem of a campsite. Situated in a very quiet and peaceful valley, the campsite sits alongside the owner's working farm. It's a beautiful spot and is really well thought out; pitches are nicely separate from one-another with space in-between and planting to create privacy. Each has its own compost loo too. There is a bar with an honesty fridge of local beer and drinks, as well as ice-creams, logs, etc all available to buy. In the morning the coffee cabin opens up and does excellent coffee and pastries. The washing up area has hot water and eco-friendly washing-up liquid, and you can separate out all your waste and recycling. Low-impact and environment-conscious camping at it's best. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Nearby attractions

It takes just under 15 minutes to drive to Forde Abbey, a privately owned former Cistercian monastery full of history dating back almost 1,000 years and featured in the film adaptation of Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd. The gardens are forever evolving, featuring designs like the Asian woodland and Prairie garden. There are plenty of other National Trust properties in the region too, including Montactute House, Lytes Cary Manor and Tintinhul Gardens. The nearest town is Crewkerne, around  10 minutes' drive away. The small market town has a good range of independent shops, including a renowned sourdough bakery and ice cream parlor, plus a monthly farmers market. For cyclists, it's worth bringing the bike with you. The campsite is adjacent to the Route 3 National cycle route and there are plenty of testing hill climbs locally – try the 'col de Seaborough' if you think you’re up to the challenge. Further afield, Wytch Wood is around 25 minutes from the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path. From here, the coast is dotted with delightful seaside towns, including Sidmouth, which has a lovely sand and shingle beach with lots of rock pools to explore when the tide is out.

Food and drink

There are lots of country pubs within a short drive. Local favourites include The Squirrel (01460 30298) with its staggering gin selection and beer garden with amazing views and The Bell (01460 30677) in Winsham, a little local pub with a games room and skittle alley, both are 10 minutes by car. The Prince of Wales (01935 822848) on Ham Hill is great for a walk and then a pint with a view or, if you’d rather drive, it’s just under 20 minutes away. Don't miss the ice cream van that visits every Friday at 5pm!
