Luxury farm glamping with epic views, a 10-minute walk from the Thames

Originally built by sisters Monica and Fiona and run by Fiona, this Chilterns glamping site is a real family affair, with considered touches at every turn. Set on their father’s working farm, complete with lambs, tractors and a combine harvester, it offers a real chance to bed down in the Thames Valley and have that countryside experience, despite being less than 30 minutes from Reading and Oxford and an hour from central London.

The farm forms a spectacular backdrop but, rest assured, you won’t be required to muck in – unless you want to. This is your opportunity to snuggle down in a grassy meadow with easterly views across the valley, making your home in one of their bell tents, luna tents or the lovingly restored farm shepherds hut that's tucked away in the trees edging the meadow. Every comfort is provided. Fiona has lovingly applied all the luxury little extras you might need, like fluffy towels and fire-effect electric heaters, while, a short stroll away, each has its own allocated bathroom with a hot shower and flushing loo.

Gaining a little insight into farm life is always fascinating, but there’s plenty of opportunity for you to explore the local offerings too. The village of Moulsford kisses the banks of the Thames, where you can stride out on the Thames Path (passing less than a mile from the site), hire a boat to cruise the river or, if you’re looking for something more high octane, try a spot of wakeboarding 20 minutes’ drive upstream. There’s also fishing close by, so if you’re a budding Paul Whitehouse, be sure to head down to Goring Lock for a spot of angling in a timeless and much-painted setting more than worthy of a scene in his TV series.

While aptly named Rolling Fields is grand, spacious and offers maximum comfort, you can really up the levels to stately with a visit to Highclere Castle (the setting for Downton Abbey), a 30-minute drive away. In summer, the filmic estate is opened to the public, including the castle, an Egyptian exhibition and the extensive, manicured gardens – there’s even a ‘real life film set’ tour if you’re an avid Downton fan. Blenheim Palace, the perfect place for romantic walks and family picnics, is around the same distance away (in the opposite direction). And if you can’t be doing with the pomp, then just bring your walking boots and keep it local – the Chilterns stretch away to the east, the North Wessex downs to the west and a nearby footpath leads you over Mouslford Downs to join the scenic Ridgeway National Trail.

About Rolling Fields Glamping Rolling Fields Glamping was originally set up by myself (Fiona) and my sister Monica, we both grew up on the farm. It was bought by our Dad in the 70s and is still a working farm, we have walked and played all over the farm and are now looking forward to sharing some of that with you. During Spring and Summer, you will be able to see sheep with their lambs in the field and combines and tractors busy collecting harvest. We are lucky to be surrounded by natural beauty and have an abundance of wildlife on the farm. You can expect to see Red Kites soar overhead, hear the owls hoot at night, see sheep grazing in the meadow and if you look carefully, you will often see hare and deer roaming in a field. The farm is in the small village of Moulsford, Oxfordshire. Moulsford is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lying by The Chilterns and in the Thames Valley. Monica has been a big part of Rolling Fields Glamping's vision and journey so far but is stepping down due to her expanding family and other work commitments, we wish her all the best and I look forward to continuing this journey with you! We have 2 beautiful 5-metre Luna Tents, which with the added height, really do make you feel like you are in luxury and also 2 gorgeous traditional 5m Star Bell Tents. These can take 4 guests each. We also have a 6m Nomadic Bell Tent which will have the capacity to sleep 5. They all have bedding and towels provided, including lovely warm duvets to keep you cosy. A travel cot can also be added to any of these. The tents have an electric fire stove inside to keep you warm on a chilly night and also their own outside seating area and brazier to have a fire and toast some marshmallows. We also have a Shepherd’s Hut which has been lovingly renovated by our step-brother Simon. This contains a small double bed, perfect for snuggling up to your loved one on a chilly night. The Shepherds hut is just nestled in the woods on the side of the field, giving it a slightly different feel to the tents. The hut has its own outside seating area and a more private outside area in the woods for you to sit with a fire.
Nearby attractions

With the Chilterns and the Thames on your doorstep you can choose from riverside or countryside. If it’s the water you go for, try water sports at The Oxford Wakeboard and Ski Club (07974 369982) or go lazy river cruising by hiring a boat from The Beetle and Wedge (01491 651381). Keen anglers can cast off in the neighbouring town of Goring-on-Thames, while those in search of culture can drive the half hour to World Heritage site Blenheim Palace (01993 810530) or Highclere Castle (01635 253210), popularised in the ITV hit Downton Abbey. If you fancy connecting to nature, Beale Park is a popular beautiful small wildlife park 15 mins from the farm, set in 40 acres of land with an exciting mix of animals and attractions for all to enjoy.

Food and drink
If you’re going to ramble anywhere make sure it’s to the The Beetle and Wedge inn and restaurant (01491 651381; booking advised). As well as a great à la carte menu, you can also choose to take your tea (or your lunch) on a moored boat on the Thames at the foot of the pub garden. For hearty Sunday roasts, The Red Lion (01491 599842) should have you well covered.
