Family camping with campfires on a fruit orchard near Norwich, with a farm shop, café and butchers

Think farm, farm shop and campsite and you probably think of the open countryside. So it’s fair to be surprised when you learn that this campsite, set near a secluded fruit orchard surrounded by plum and apples, is actually secreted away on the outskirts of Norwich. The result is a prime location not just for exploring the Broads and rural Norfolk but also for hopping on a bus and venturing into the historic city centre. You can visit a cathedral and busy market by morning and be padding the beaches with an ice-cream by the afternoon.

Three miles from the city centre and four miles from Wroxham (the unofficial ‘capital’ or the Norfolk Broads), White House Farm is a farm shop, butchers and café that’s been a popular pick-your-own location for generations. The new campsite, set in a meadow just beyond the public farm shop area, is home to around 30 camping pitches, along with a clutch of bell tents you can hire if you’re too lazy to pitch your own. Facilities consist of all the basics – flushing, hot gas powered showers and washing-up stations – while campfires are very much allowed and offer a rustic way to cook the fresh produce you buy in the shop.

A bus stop near the farm entrance makes for a handy way to reach the city centre but, if you don’t mind paying for parking, it’s also a very easy five-minute drive. In the opposite direction, meanwhile, adventures in the Norfolk Broads await. Hire boats in Wroxham for a day out on the water or head to Horstead and Cotishall where there are good pubs and a nice riverside walk upstream and, at Horstead, the site of a former watermill where you can swim in the old mill pond. Further afield, it’s a half-hour to the coast, with good beaches at Sea Palling, Happisburgh and Cromer, to name but a few, with National Trust properties en route including Blickling and Felbrigg Hall.

Plum Camping Pitch
Great except the very cold shower.
Perfectly decent and good value campsite for tents only. Very close to the Rebellion Way cycle route if anyone is touring that. Great provision for recharging phones, power banks and other devices - again great for cycle tourists and bikepackers. The only but big negative for me was when I got there there was none of the promised hot water. After 120 kms of sweaty cycling the main thing I wanted from the campsite was a warm shower, I got a very cold shower.

It was the perfect spot. An easy bus into Norwich and a quiet and peaceful escape. Simple, clean and rustic.

Opal Bell Tent
This was our 3rd stay at the site in a bell tent. The site is spacious and has the added perks of a communal fridge / freezer and electric points to charge phone. Not many sites permit campfires but wood can be purchased and fire pits provided. Showers and toilets are clean and plenty available. Bell tent is amazing and spacious. Already on our arrival. Henry is lovely, popped round many times to see if we all ok. Such a lovely site 🥰

Plum Camping Pitch
Over priced
Back to basics is fine if the pricing reflects this. Not for the feint hearted. Showers and toilets are a selection sheds with drafts reaching places you don't want drafts (if you know what I mean).

Plum Camping Pitch
The campsite was easy to find and well located on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. As listed, the campsite had good facilities including clean loos and showers, drinking water, charging points and also fire pits and logs available. We didn’t get to enjoy the farm shop/cafe as it was closed for the bank holiday. For better or worse - there is phone reception if needed. It’s a good family camping location, perhaps given the bank holiday weekend, we were unfortunately blighted by 3 couples who met on site and stayed up very late, very noisily, and this meant we didn’t sleep well at all and has ruined the start to our day. Bad luck for us with regards with regard to positioning and unsocial behaviour. There was a lot of swearing and horrible jokes from 6.30pm-2/2.30am. Such a shame. It wouldn’t stop us from returning and hope for better luck - we didn’t feel like we could have asked them respect the campsite code unfortunately and there wasn’t anyone on site to do that on behalf of guests.

Plum Camping Pitch
This campsite has all the facilities and space needed for a great few days. There is a cafe and farm shop and the Raider Cider Brewry all on the same site. For a little campsite treat.

Camp within a secluded and stunning fruit orchard at Plum Camping, White House Farm. Set within 250 acres of fields and woodland, a hop, skip and a jump away from Norwich city, close to Norfolk's award winning North and East coastline and plenty of attractions. The campsite even benefits from sharing a site with the award winning White House Farm Shop and Butchery. Plum Camping has several unfurnished bell tents available to hire too, so all you need to worry about packing is your bedding and sense of adventure. The campsite has super duper all singing, all dancing, flushable toilets, gas-powered showers, washing-up stations, taps for drinking water and a communal barn area with fridges and freezers for use, and if you walk over to the public farm shop area there's also a host of other facilities, including a farm shop, butchers, coffee shop, a fenced picnic area, beautician’s, as well as a dance studio. 10% OFF BANK HOLIDAY DISCOUNT CODES: Easter Bank Holiday: NZLKZA3H Early May Bank Holiday: DSUWLWXV May Spring Bank Holiday: IKVHBCNG August Bank Holiday: NH9Z9MQ1
Nearby attractions

A lot of people come to Norfolk for the coast and it's a 30-minute drive to the nearest beaches around Walcott, Sea Palling and Happisburgh and a little further to the likes of Cromer and Mundesley but, from White House Farm the two major options are actually far closer. Firstly there's Norwich, a compact city with a castle museum (01603 493625) and grand cathedral (01603 218300) and, along with plenty of well-known shops and big names, a host of good independents in the Lanes portion of the city. You can take bus number 11 from a stop near the entrance to the farm and get into the city centre in half an hour. Secondly, you can skip the city in favour of the watery countryside and explore the Norfolk Broads. It's a 10-minute drive to Wroxham where you can hire day boats or canoes and explore the waterways – take a picnic and motor along to Wroxham Broad where you can enjoy food on the boat as you watch the sailing boats race on weekends. Those with kids should also try BeWILDerwood (01692 633033), a famed Broads family attraction with tree bridges, boat rides and all sorts of creative mysteries.

Food and drink

Grab food to cook over the campfire from the farm shop or have a bite to eat in the café. Off site, take the bus in to Norwich where there are endless options – Frank's Bar (01603 618902), Café 33 (01603 626097) and Harriet's Tearooms (01603 614848) are particular favourites if you can get a seat or try something from the market. For a good pub, book ahead for The Recruiting Sergeant in Horstead (01603 737077), 15 minutes' drive away.
