Eco camping in the heart of the High Weald and Kent's castle country

There's no boozing, big crowds or thumping music late in to the night. This is Glassenbury. Not Glastonbury. But there are a few things the two have in common. There's plenty of space, there's a focus on the eco-friendly and the setting, on a farm, is left for sheep to graze for the vast majority of the year. And, like Glastonbury, once word gets out, we've no doubt campers will be crashing the internet to bag themselves a pitch. Numbers here are limited to something more like 100 people, rather than 100,000. It's small, it's quiet... it's great.

New for 2021, Glassenbury Camping is set in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and expands over some twelve acres of land, with campers pitching wherever they please. Owners Raf and Maria see themselves as caretakers of the site, which they've created with careful consideration for the environment. They use renewable energy from solar and wood-fired systems, and toilets are of the composting variety. The mostly flat meadow, meanwhile, is surrounded on most sides by high trees and shaggy hedgerows, and what meagre slope exists is south-east facing, so you get fabulous sunsets on summer evenings.

In a designated corner you'll find the site’s three pre-pitched bell tents, each furnished with a double bed and side tables and uniquely decorated with its own selection up-cycled treasures (handmade bunting, a wood-framed mirror or perhaps a Moroccan rug and chest). Outside, you'll find a BBQ and campfire pit, something that Maria and Raf place great importance on. All campers at the site can enjoy campfires and, as evening falls, the general scent of woodsmoke and the happy crackle of campfires is the main soundtrack to life under the stars.

A particular bonus of camping here is Glassenbury's convenient location. It's less than two hours from central London and finds itself in prime walking and cycling country. The bridleway that runs just north of the campsite is part of the Long Distance Walkers Association's "Three Castles Walk", which lets you take in Sissinghurst Castle, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle all in one day and gives you an idea of how close they all are. Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest is also just a ten-minute drive from the campsite and it's less than half an hour to the village of Battle (the site of the battle of 1066) and the coast around Hastings. It's enough that you won't be able to do it all in one holiday. But then, like Glastonbury, you'll probably be returning year after year.

Grass Pitch
Lovely views, friendly hosts, lots to do nearby, composting toilets nice and non-smelly. Nice little touches - flowers/shower gel. Next addition - a sink area next to the toilets for brushing teeth, washing face/hands? Thanks

Grass Pitch
A great campsite with a wonderful view over the rolling hills. The compost loo, shower and all other facilities were great, well kept and always clean. Raf was often on hand for log deliveries and help. I walked to Sissinghurst from the campsite (1.5hrs each way) and visited Water Lane which were both great and not too far away.

Grass Pitch
Unforgettable Camping Experience
I recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend at The Grass Pitch, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality that immediately set the tone for a fantastic stay. The campsite itself is a hidden gem, offering stunning natural surroundings that truly allow you to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with lush, soft grass perfect for pitching a tent. The peaceful ambiance, combined with the breathtaking views, made our stay incredibly relaxing. What truly sets The Grass Pitch apart, however, is the team running the site. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of our experience was flawless. Their attention to detail and willingness to assist with any request made us feel valued and cared for throughout our stay. Whether it was providing local tips, helping with setting up, or just sharing a friendly chat, they made our camping trip feel like a home away from home. In summary, The Grass Pitch is an exceptional camping destination. The beautiful setting, combined with the outstanding service provided by the wonderful team, made this one of the best camping experiences we've ever had. I can't recommend it highly enough and can't wait to return!

With breathtaking views over an area of outstanding natural beauty, and plenty of activities on your door step it offers a unique setting to escape the stresses of every day life. We are located only a short distance from some of Kent’s best walks and mountain biking routes, including Bedgebury Pinetum, Bewl Water, Sissinghurst Castle. We also have a great selection of local Pubs, Restaurants, Farm Shops and Vineyards in the area. We are within easy travel distance from London, Hastings, Lewes, Brighton, Haywards Heath, Eastbourne and the South Coast. Our campsite has been designed to offer you an off-grid and sustainable camping experience, and all of our facilities are provided with careful consideration to the environment. We take sustainability seriously, and we try where possible to make the best eco friendly decisions. Our key aim is to provide a safe and friendly location for our campers to relax and reconnect with friends and family, and connect with fellow campers around the campfire. The campsite covers approximately 12 acres. Friends and families can camp together, and campers can pitch where they please within the allocated field. There is plenty of space to pitch with distance between each camping group.
