A small off-grid campsite on the Lizard Peninsula

If you want a small and simple campsite to base yourself while you explore the Lizard Peninsula, Gear Farm Camping might just be the one. Its location offers views of the Helford Estuary and beaches 15 minutes’ drive in almost every direction. Pitch your tent in this central spot and you are not far off the South West Coast Path and right on the West Kernow Way. And, on top of all that, it’s a nice and chilled place to stay which even has a couple of pre-pitched tents for people who don’t have their own.

Tents, campervans, caravans, hikers, bikers, and dogs are all welcome to this relaxed, summer-only site, which occupies a field of just over an acre on the edge of an organic family farm. Most of the time, you are given a choice of where to pitch from among the 20 spacious plots positioned around the field’s edges. All are off grid but all the important things are taken care of in a small-but-perfectly-formed timber-clad facilities block. There’s a place to charge your phone, hot water for washing up and two large fridge-freezers for campers to share—what more do you need than that? Oh yes—loos. There are three of those and three hot water showers too. Campfires and barbecues are fine to use as long as they are off ground and don’t scorch the grass, but you’ll need to bring your own.

This simple site is looked after by Sarah whose family have been welcoming campers for almost 30 years. They’ve also been farming here all that time and there’s a handy veg stall where you can buy their seasonal, organic supplies right outside the gate. There’s a pasty shop nearby too where you can pick up a picnic for days out—and there are plenty of those to be had round here. There’s watersports and boat trips on the Helford Estuary and family-friendly attractions like the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and Flambards within a few miles. You could visit a different beach every day of your holiday, spend time exploring harbour villages and towns or walk the South West Coast Path to see them all.

Lovely stay and exceptional pasties
Really lovely campsite! Facilities were good and really clean! They have a lovely farm stall outside for their locally grown produce which is accessible all day. You can pay for at the shop or an honesty box! They also have a pasty shop where you can pre order or buy sausage rolls or hot pasties to take on your lunchtime excursions! Sarah met us on arrival and was very helpful and lent us tent pegs as left some of ours behind! Highly recommend! Really lovely stay.

Pre- Pitched Tent 1
Camping in style!
Gear Farm was awesome! The tent was huge and had everything we needed inside. We had a dining room (porch) table and chairs, an inside table and chairs, lights, storage compartments, airbeds the lot. The campsite itself had great showers and toilets at the bottom of the field. There were ball games and outside toys for the whole campsite to enjoy. There were two communal fridge freezers onsite, which came in handy for milk and other perishable items. Gear Farm pasties, sold across the street, are a must! There is fancy coffee and a vegetable stall across the street as well if a latte is more your thing! The location is great as you are 15/20 minutes from great beaches and lovely harbourside towns. Sarah was an excellent host always making sure our stay was alright and rushing off to great new guests or tidy up the site. Highly recommended!

We have been welcoming campers to Gear Farm for nearly 30 years! With huge pitches and plenty of space to enjoy, the site is the ideal location to explore West Cornwall. Overlooking the Helford River valley, you can enjoy spectacular sunsets while you sip a cold beer. Our vibe is very much ‘unplugged’ so you can switch off from the stresses of everyday life, feel the Earth beneath your feet and spend time with each other. If it is relaxed and spacious family camping you are after – we think you will fit right in! Gear Farm is within easy reach of many sandy beaches and is often used as a Kayak friendly base, Kayak and SUP hire is available locally from Coverack. Many of our campers come to enjoy the Cornish Coast path, or use us as base to explore the Lizard Peninsula. We welcome caravans, campervans, tents or whatever else you might want to camp in – our camping pitches are really big, so you can be spread out a little without hearing your neighbours!
Nearby attractions

Gear Farm Camping is in West Cornwall between the villages of St Martin and Mawgan (not to be confused with St Mawgan on the Cornish north coast), three miles from Helford. The West Kernow Way cycle route, passes right by the site and the South West Coast Path passes through Helford which is about an hour’s walk away or a drive of about 10 minutes. From there, a foot ferry can take you across the river to continue on the South West Coast Path or to visit Trebah Gardens (nine miles if you go by car). Further along the estuary, there’s boat trips and boat hire from Sailaway St Anthony at Gillan Creek. The whole of the Lizard Peninsula is within easy reach with fishing villages and coves like Cadgwith and Coverack (both nine miles away) and beaches like Kennack Sands (also nine miles) and Kynance Cove (12 miles) popular places to visit. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is three miles away. Flambards Theme Park is just under six.

Food and drink

There’s a handy veg shop, selling organic produce from the farm, and a pasty shop right opposite the entrance to Gear Farm Camping. For more than that, head for Helford (three miles) where there’s a village shop or, for more shops, including supermarkets, Helston is the closest town (six miles). For a meal out, try The Shipwright’s Arms in Helford which offers views of the estuary or The Five Pilchards Inn in Porthallow (eight miles). It’s about the same distance to foodie Porthleven on the opposite side of the peninsula. There are plenty of places to choose from there including Nauti for good pizza – but your hosts would say, you can’t beat Porthleven Fish & Chips.
