Camping close to New Haven
We enjoyed staying here two nights in our 27 foot travel trailer. The GPS took us past the driveways, so we missed the HipCamp signs that were low on the ground and ended up going up the road where it dead ends. Don’t make the same mistake we did, because there was minimal space to turn around (think Austin Powers!). Once we got into the site, it was easy to get level. The electric wasn’t working, so we messaged Rick and he came right over. He had to flip the breaker, which is located in his locked shed. There is a water hookup, but we filled our fresh tank (it was getting close to freezing temps) and the water pressure was pretty low, but we eventually got filled up. It is a wooded area, so we didn’t bother setting up Starlink, but AT&T signal was great. It was very quiet and peaceful - no loud neighbors, barking dogs, or road noise. They have a yurt in the same area, but no one was staying there while we were there. This site was close to New Haven (20 - 25 min), so we checked out Yale University, got some great pizza at Frank Pepe’s, had a delicious lobster roll at Lobster Landing, and enjoyed beer, margaritas, and live music at Stony Creek Brewery. After a long day of exploring, we enjoyed a relaxing night sitting out by the fire. We would definitely stay here again!
Tip: We had to use 4WD to get out the steep driveway. If you can, enter the second driveway. Then you will be able to exit the driveway that goes downhill rather than going uphill.

If you’re looking to get back to the woods and back to yourself, this is the place. Not your typical overcrowded campground. This was very private secluded with plenty of time to wander through your own thoughts and dreams. Will definitely be returning.
Meeting Rick and his wife it’s very obvious they love their property and they love to share and have others enjoy it. really great people.

At one with nature
The Hartwoods was an absolutely amazing place to stay for a few nights. The site is beautifully maintained for an RV or tent (like we did) with potable water and electricity. There are trails all wrapped around the property with plenty of nature. Rick, Melanie, and their fluffy friend Micah popped in for a visit and to drop of some eggs from their personal chickens, some of the best eggs we have ever had. Their involvement in our stay was just the right amount, we knew they were accessible, but we also had plenty of time to enjoy nature.
We are already planning our trip back and cannot recommend The Hartwoods enough!
