Prospector‘s Rush #3
Property is no longer maintained
The home of (presumably) the owners of this property are selling their place, and it would seem that as soon as they moved out they abandoned property maintenance and are now just making whatever money comes in from hipcampers. There is rusty metal everywhere from the abandoned mine, the road driving up is in horrible condition, and there is literally no hiking or anything to do nearby unless you drive out of camp. the toilet is just a hole in the ground with a wood platform and toilet seat covering it, Not even a shack for privacy. From site 3, we had almost a direct view to the toilet. The host was almost completely unresponsive, and the directions about meeting them first are misleading. This is comparatively worse than any KOA or BLM site and almost 2-3x the cost. We had a good trip and made the most of it, but this was a waste of money compared to other options.

Nice spot. Easy access to Idaho Springs. Quiet. Great views. TONS of trash when arrived. Spent about a half hour cleaning it all up. No fault of the owner, but whoever stayed in our spot before us should be ashamed.

Beautiful views, needs a bit upkeep
The good: pretty views, remote, quiet. Great sunset + sunrise. The firepits, tables, and available toilet are good adds. The notes: The last bit of road I took in (last 0.5mile to camp, coming down from Golden Gate park area) was in need of maintenance. Deep ruts and big rocks throughout - I have high clearance and 4WD but it was still more of an off-road type adventure than I expected. High clearance and a slow creep is a must. Using the GPS coordinates didn’t quite work (it said I had arrived well before I did). And the directions sent by host made it sound like you’d see the place to turn in shortly after getting onto the road it’s on, but that wasn’t the case, which made it confusing (maybe I was coming in from another direction?). Booked site #3 and the plot that the app directed me to was a bit small and too steep for SUV camping. There was some trash left on the ground here. Saw that there was also a #3 on the clearing across with the table and outcrop and from reviews it seemed like that’s where most folks camped. I backed in there and it was a much better grade for sleeping in back of SUV plus has amazing views. Looked like the hosts had rigged a fence for the camp toilet at some point but this was down and the toilet area wasn’t very private. I also caught the smell a lot from camp, but less bad from the outcrop because of the wind. In a bigger vehicle, expect to do 5 point turns to get turned out of spots - could do with clearing a few more trees.

Beautiful views! Loved the location. My only note would be that (at least spot #4) is tight! I was in a Big Agnes Copper UL2, and there was really only a single way to pitch it within the spot that was relatively flat and not too close to the fire pit. Definitely great for a camper van or small tent, but be careful if you’re in a bigger tent. For the route, my AWD equinox with a 1.5L turbo got to the spot with no issues.

A very solid camping experience. Getting there wasn’t too much trouble with an AWD SUV, but I would mention that you are going the right way when passing the sign that tells you not to trust your GPS. The nearby campsites were not on top of us and everyone there was a respectful steward of the shared space. Would certainly go back.
