The campground at Great Dunes is closed in the winter so we decided to camp at Steve’s place. You can’t beat the price and it’s close to the park. We have a van so the road noise didn’t bother us

Great location definitely recommend. If you stay make sure you make a point to star gaze it’s unreal. Had a great experience with Steven.

A bit of a surprise
We were initially surprised by the large “Don’t Tread on Me” flag under the American Flag, and the pen with 4 large guard dogs. We weren’t sure if we’d really be welcomed there when we drove up. That being said, it turned out okay: it was an affordable site about half an hour from the dunes. The sky is great, you can hear the highway and the chickens, and the toilet is basic but doesn’t smell weird. The host is very passionate about off the grid living, and we had some interesting conversations with him.

Simple, clean, and a beautiful view
Only spot we could find in the entire area with a toilet which is always appreciated. Composting toilet was always clean and had TP. Campsites are pretty simple, but it was nice to be able to book last minute and know we had a site instead of vying for BLM land on labor day weekend. basic campsite but it was quiet, clean, and an amazing view of Blanca Peak, the sunset, and the Milky Way. 20min to Great Sand Dunes. 15 to Zapata Falls.
