As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. There are many developed areas with firepits. The Lower camping area is flat and less windy, and would be best for tenting. The top has the best views, and is at a slight slope with many flat areas established. Both areas can be drove through without backing, although the top has some dead end paths.

Coyote Canyon Mountain Base Camp
I got here after sunset and when I got to the end of the culde sac I walked up a bit to make sure I was in the right spot. Found a fire ring and pulled the camper up to the campsite. The stars were magnificent and I knew I would be in for a treat when the sun rose. Wow! Absolutely stunning!! Great spot for the price.

Coyote Canyon Mountain Base Camp
My husband, our 2 dogs, and I really enjoyed our stay here. We were the only ones on the property, and there were lots of wildflowers in the tundra. We saw a herd of deer crossing the fields and hills nearby, and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the mountains. It's called coyote canyon for a reason, as we did get woken up 3 times by the coyotes not far off, which was actually pretty neat to hear. Definitely wear long thick socks or ankle high closed toed shoes as there's a lot of super tiny stickers in the grassy areas. Had to change out of my crocs, but my dogs seemed to do fine and not have a ton stick to them. It was also quite windy until around sunset time, so we waited til then to get our campfire going. Then the wind picked up again a coyple hours after sunrise. Overall was a relaxing beautiful stay.

Great spot. Nice level area to setup camp by the fire pit on the top of the property. Star gazing was incredible. Wildlife was abundant.

So great! The best stargazing I’ve ever seen. The site was clean and super quiet. A reasonable drive to Sand Dunes and restaurants. Would absolutely stay again!

We had a great stay at this hipcamp! The views were amazing and we loved stargazing at night. The wind does get pretty strong, but we slept in our car and it worked out perfect.

Amazing location
It was very good directions. My girlfriend and I camped in the lower lot and it was amazing! There was flat ground right next to an already set up campfire! The stars was amazing and only 35 minutes away from the sand dunes. There is a diner about 15 minutes from our tent that has amazing breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Definitely would recommend this campsite if you’re looking for a private get away close to the sand dunes. Also, definitely check out the Gator farm on your way here. 300 rescued alligators, snakes, a bunch of Tortoises, lizards, and you get to hold a baby alligator!
