Super friendly host and community there. Invited us to dinner with them.
Note of advice, follow her instructions on the directions!! If you don't (like we did) you'll go the rough and bumpy way up the mountain

Awesome spot! High up and feels far away from the rest of the world.
Elena was also very responsive to all needs. Perfect getaway spot.

Beautiful Views, Weird Vibes
The campsite is both close to Santa Cruz (within 45 mins of downtown) and extremely remote (up a very long, narrow, winding road that eventually turns to pot-hole ridden dirt). NOTE: google and Apple Maps cannot get you here. They will get you lost. Very lost. And there is no service, so you'll be f*d. You need to follow the hard-to-read written directions which only detail what to do if you're coming from the Bay Area. If you're coming from Santa Cruz you'll have to message the host directly for directions, but again, that would require you to have service, which you won't.
The views from the campsite are truly lovely. Excellent location to watch the sunset and stargaze.
But I will not be going back because in the morning when I woke up and was getting dressed, there were random people lurking around as if trying to scope my husband and I out. As I was changing I made eye contact with someone walking down the path to the campsite, and they immediately hid in a bush. Later my husband saw someone (a different person) and they did the same thing. Then a group of people walked through the campsite at 8am talking loudly, waking up my daughter who was still sleeping in the tent. Similar things happened the next morning.
I'm generally not a paranoid person, nor do I expect total privacy when camping. But the whole vibe was off. It's a bit alarming to be this remote and to feel like people are lurking, and who hide and don't acknowledge you when you make eye contact.

A find with a fab host
We loved our stay at the Sunrise Cottage which was very well equipped and lived up to its name. The homestead is amazing yet so close to San Jose. Elena very graciously let us stay a second night at the Hummingbird Cottage because we’d mixed up our reservations. We had an opportunity to use the shared kitchen and restrooms with the Woofers, and had a great experience. What a find!

Beautiful views from the property. Very peaceful! And the cozy cabin.
Oh yes please follow the directions provided by the host in description and not what google map tells you.

Beautiful view
I stayed here during the recent meteor shower. I have to say it was a fantastic decision. Elena was super helpful and communicative and the camping space was private, clean and spacious. Would highly recommend!
