WindTree is an awesome retreat perched high on top of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, over looking the entire Monterey Bay and Santa Clara Valley. WindTree is sacred land used by many over the past 30 years for retreat and ceremony. It has also been a working "Wwoof" -ing farm for volunteers from all over the world to come and learn about organic gardening in a fun, beautiful, nurturing community restoring our sense of interrelatedness and encouraging planetary sustainability by our choices and concerns for the wellness of the environment. You can make your experience apart of this community or enjoy a quiet private camp site away from any activities. We are off the grid with solar power and our own well. We have small organic gardens with chickens and goats. You will love it up here under the stars. Note: RV's over 21 feet will have difficulties on our driveway.

Sunrise
A find with a fab host
We loved our stay at the Sunrise Cottage which was very well equipped and lived up to its name. The homestead is amazing yet so close to San Jose. Elena very graciously let us stay a second night at the Hummingbird Cottage because we’d mixed up our reservations. We had an opportunity to use the shared kitchen and restrooms with the Woofers, and had a great experience. What a find!

Beautiful views from the property. Very peaceful! And the cozy cabin. Oh yes please follow the directions provided by the host in description and not what google map tells you.

Vista
Beautiful view
I stayed here during the recent meteor shower. I have to say it was a fantastic decision. Elena was super helpful and communicative and the camping space was private, clean and spacious. Would highly recommend!

Vista
Vista at WindTree
My husband and I spent a weekend celebrating our early wedding anniversary at WindTree as well as at the surrounding towns of Santa Cruz and Carmel. Vista at WindTree was the perfect secluded spot for winding down our evenings and enjoying dinner with a fire and the most gorgeous sunset views. We slept in our rooftop tent and I enjoyed practicing astrophotography with our dog. We were able to view the Milky Way as there was minimal light pollution, which was a definite highlight of our stay. I reached out to Elena in advance asking her for directions specifically from Santa Cruz and Monterey and she was extremely quick to respond. The directions were not hard to follow! However--while it states in the listing that the road is 2WD accessible, I would highly recommend AWD or 4WD for the drive up. The dirt road was just fine for my Subaru but it could be more "technical" for those with a regular vehicle/sedan. I could also see how the road would become muddy during the rainy season, so play it safe and bring a better vehicle if you are able. The composting toilet was comfortable to sit on, and since my husband and I have done dispersed camping in the past, this was already an upgrade from what we're used to, especially when needing to go #2 (this may be TMI but little things like that matter when choosing a campsite). There was plenty of toilet paper and sawdust. I liked how there was plenty of privacy as well. We highly recommend Vista and would love to return!

Medicine Wheel
Definitely coming back
This place was beautiful. The camp site was nice and big with a camp fire right in the middle. We were able to accommodate five 2-3person tents on the camp pad. Such a great space to watch the meteor showers, honestly cannot recommend it enough. Definitely coming back.

Medicine Wheel
Not private. Nice views. Very easy.
A nice little sandy plot with a great view of the sunset during Summer. A private composting toilet, a hose for water (and/or shower if you're ok doing it in the open), and picnic table, a sink (with no running water of its own, but still convenient for washing dishes with the hose), a propane BBQ, and a fire pit. Reasonably private. We did hear conversations from a couple of different directions a couple times during the day, but had only one group walk by our campsite during our stay. Pulling into the property we didn't know what to expect. It looked like a found object collector's back yard and weren't clear if we were in the right place. But we followed the signs to our 'Medicine Wheel' spot, past the goat pen, and it all worked out well. Uvas Canyon County Park is just a few hundred yards away, and we took a nice long hike down the first trail we found. It took us 2.5 miles down into the canyon on what looked like a fire road. It took us to a couple of campsites with some other trails. The hike back up was a good workout (about a 1,500 ft climb)!
