Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2023.
The original owner, of this property, Varisto,  was a happy go lucky bootlegger back in the day, that welcomed many to try his brew and listen to a song or two on the accordion.  He's good neighbor, a famous cowboy artist, Jack Swanson, and he used to have fun fishing out of the river, and sharing a glass or two.  One day as Jack was herding his cattle through the area, past Princess Camp, located across the street, he spend a little too long here at Star Route, and to his surprise, the cattle had made their way into Princess Camp startling a few campers outside their airstreams. The Esselen Indians settled just up the road at the Cachagua Community Park back in the 1800's right by the Carmel River, which has an old stone house above the river, and many places to sit and reflect.Nourish yourself in nature in this luxury tent on a piece of property situated near the Los Padres Forest.  You can't help but completely relax with the vibe that envelops you as you step foot on the ground, and  takes you back to a slice of days gone by.   The main house is about 300 feet away from the tent, and you have a beautiful private bathroom close to the tent with an indoor toilet and shower.  To one side of the tent is a large picnic table for only you.  There is a gas BBQ grill, and an outdoor sink.  You'll need to bring your own food supplies, water, and sleeping bags, bedding/linens.  The property is completely fenced in, and just a 5 minute walk to the Carmel River, and a 1/4 mile hike to Los Padres Dam.  We are 25 minutes from the Carmel Valley Village.  There are two other rentals on the property, but each has it's own privacy the way they are situated. There are chickens, and yes, a rooster that make up part of the eclectic farm.  We also have one very friendly dog, Ruby, and one cat, Cleo. WiFi is available

Quail Nest at Star Route
Camping with animals!
We had the best time at Jeff and Rose’s campground. It was a lovely retreat away from traffic. I loved being around their animals, especially the dog. Be warned that there a rooster on the property so be prepared for some early mornings. It was a great place that had everything we needed, a shower, bed and grill with a grill stove. It was not too far from Carmel valley’s town center with a very, very scenic drive. Hopefully, we’ll be back! I loved that they have different options for stays too.

Quail Nest at Star Route
I had a fantastic time staying here. The camp is very well set up with a fridge, kettle, bathroom and outdoor sink. The grounds are very well kept - having breakfast by the pond was a real highlight! The location is perfect as well, I was able to explore Carmel Valley and Jeff gave me some great tips for hiking in the area. The remote location is perfect for stargazing too.

Quail Nest at Star Route
So much space, lots of amenities!
Incredible site and was very private but felt safe with the surrounding neighbors. Jeff was very kind and Ruby definitely brightened our day. Yes it’s a winding road to get there but a completely safe route and well-worth the trip. Thanks again!

Quail Nest at Star Route
Charming site near Big Sur
Had a lovely stay at this charming site with beautiful grounds. Short walk to Carmel River swimming hole and about a 40min drive to Big Sur. Jeff and Rosie made us feel very welcomed and comfortable! Will be back.

Quail Nest at Star Route
A Carmel Valley Gem
This was a perfect getaway. Jeff and Rose are genuinely lovely hosts and the Quail’s nest was a peaceful home base for us to enjoy Carmel Valley and the surrounding area. We appreciated the washroom, fridge space, charging station and comfy place to relax. Most of all, the beautifully whimsical gardens and property made this feel like we had found a secret California gem with two really generous and kind folks. After a couple of days we got used to the winding roads and would love to come back.
