We originally purchased the 20 acres of untouched land and built our cabin, the "Snug Shack," as a getaway from the city. Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place. We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." Explore thousands of additional acres of Klamath National Forest, including canyons, creeks, rocky plains, meadows, and deep woods, from your front door! Wild horses, wild birds, wildlife, and wild flowers surround you in this secluded off grid experience. The cabin has solar power, bluetooth stereo, gas stove top, running water, mini fridge, sleeping loft with "full" size mattress (bring your own linens/bedding), and a hot water outdoor shower and composting toilet (similar to the "loveable loo:" look it up if you're not familiar). Parts of the cabin were built using salvaged dead cedar and pine we milled right on the land here. We originally designed and built this getaway from city life for our own enjoyment, and now we are sharing it with you! You probably won't see or hear us much during your stay, but we live on a neighboring property and are available if you have any questions during your stay. Great for a single person, couple, or small family looking for a secluded, quiet retreat, or for a small group gathering. Up to four people can stay in the cabin, but it will be a tight squeeze. Kids under 8 are free and don't need to be added to your total. If you would like to have additional people beyond the four the cabin can accommodate (up to ten total), they will need to camp in one of several possible camp sites (two with a place to pull a camper/van in) and/or stay in the "wooden tent." We don't rent the campsites or mini cabin separately, so you do not need to worry about other people being present at those sites when you stay. Near Juanita Lake and Shovel Creek. Enjoy day trips to Lava Beds National Park, Medicine Lake, Crater Lake, Klamath RIver, and Mount Shasta. Great stopping point along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway (hwy 97), and halfway between San Francisco and Portland. A note on smoke and fires in our region: Summer is fire season for most of the Western US. We will alert hipcampers to known hazardous conditions (fire or smoke danger) in our immediate area and will grant cancellations beyond the cancellation window in the event of directly hazardous conditions. We use "airnow" air quality index ratings to judge air quality in our location. Hazardous conditions are defined as sustained ratings of "unhealthy" or worse at our location. Fire hazards are defined as fires with direct impact on our location, such as evacuation warnings and orders, fires blocking immediate access routes (roads), or fires with reasonable potential create such impacts in the near term. Fires causing general travel detours to the region do not fall under this category. We will not grant cancellations beyond the cancellation window for general smoke/haze in the air or wildfires not directly threatening us. It is guests' responsibility to monitor air quality conditions and wildfire events in advance and determine feasibility of travel for themselves. Some additional notes about staying here: - This is a hand-built, quirky little cabin. We will greet you and show you around when you arrive, but you will not see us after that unless you need something. An instruction sheet is provided in the cabin covering main points as well. - Please bring your linens or sleeping bags, as the cabin does not come with them. The bed in the loft is a full size. - There is a walkie-talkie provided in the cabin, should you need to communicate with the owners who live nearby. - Watch your head if you are tall! - Phone service is spotty to non-existent here. - The solar power system is adequate to run the mini fridge and provide basic power for phones, computers, and other electronics. Do not expect to use high wattage appliances such as heaters or hair dryers, or anything else with a heating element. - Water for the sink and shower is from one 40 gallon tank filled with fresh mountain well water prior to your visit, and refilled once every two days of rental. In our experience 40 gallons lasts two people about 3 days of ordinary use (showers, dishes, drinking, etc). If you need more than that, tank refills can be purchased from the "extras," with a limit of one refill per day. Refilling requires that we drive a truck near the cabin, so parked cars will need to be moved. 7 gallon standalone water totes are also available in the "extras." - Fires: we allow fires in the woodstove and outside in the fire pit when it is legal in the county. In the summer time, fires are often banned in the county. Fires are never to be left unattended, always completely extinguished at night/when unattended, and no large bonfires. When fires are permitted, a bucket of water will also be provided. Wood bundles are available for purchase as an extra at checkout. - The toilet is a simple composting toilet. Wood mulch (provided) is added in on top of your business and it produces no smell when used correctly. Instructions are provided. We will swap out the bin as necessary. - A trash can is included in the cabin. We hope you enjoy your stay and love this location as much as we do!

Snug Shack A-Frame Cabin

Lovely rustic cabin! Cabin was charming and comfortable, toilet was clean and odorless, outdoor hot-water shower was delightful, and the setting was quiet and peaceful. Perfect stay! We had a small battery-operated fan with us and were very glad we did! The loft gets very warm, even with the small window open and with the window fan provided by the host. The set-up is such that you can feel any breeze from the window fan (and there is no opposite window for a cross breeze), so the air felt still and a bit hot early in the evening. The battery-operated fan saved the day and helped us sleep. Suggest you bring one if you’ve got one!

Great Stay!

This experience was so wonderful! The cabin itself is hand crafted and unique in all the best ways! So impressed with this little place. It is the glamping experience you’re looking for if you want a camping experience, but also the conveniences of electricity, plug-ins for phones, a small kitchen with running water, a stove, a small fridge, a shower, and a little toilet surrounded by privacy walls. The host was wonderful and met up with us beforehand to give us a little tour of everything and making sure that we had everything we needed for the night. My kids had the best time and keep telling me that this little cabin experience was their favorite part of their whole vacation, even though this was just one night of our 8 night trip! I highly recommend this place!

Peaceful Beauty

This site is exactly what you need if you are looking to escape city life for a few days. Entirely on your own, surrounded by beauty and peaceful quiet. It is extreme remote and was a bit tricky to find, so watch for the yellow gate and painted signs!

What a lovely jewel box of a place. Very private, clean and comfortable. Andy was a very kind host answered all questions and then left us to enjoy our stay. I was a little worried about the loft bed as I’m 78 with dicey knees but it was fine. Outdoor shower and composting toilet were well set up with easy to use instructions.

We loved staying in the snug shack! It’s a beautiful cabin in a gorgeous setting. It was obviously built well and many small details have been considered. Waking up to the sunshine through the roof and walking around the property in the morning were high points. We’d definitely stay here again!
