Nomadic camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
16 Peaks Camp is located off Route 64, 15 minutes north of the town of Williams AZ, 45 minutes south of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. The camp is tucked away in a quiet valley, 1.2 miles down the Forest Service 736 Road nestled among an extinct volcano crater, hills, mesas and mountains. This quiet, high-desert getaway can be easily accessed by all vehicles through the spring, summer and fall. Winter access depends on the snowfall.
There are 10 designated, private campsites available on 16 Peaks’ 10-acre property. Each site is tucked among mature pinyon pine and juniper trees, with views of the following peaks:
Howard Mesa, Hobble Mountain, Buck Mountain, Scarp Hill, Spring Valley Coxcombs, Kendrick Peak, Elk Hill, Spring Valley Mountain, Humphreys Peak, Agassiz Peak, Wildcat Hill, Horse Trap Hill, Sitgreaves Mountain, Cone Crater, Kaibab High Hill, Bill Williams Mountain
The camp is on a slightly sloped hillside. Each site is well-marked, sufficiently leveled for trailers and tents, easily accessed, and has a bird's-eye view of the peaks around the valley.
On clear nights, you can enjoy the starry skies right from your campsite. There is no light pollution from street lights or city lights. A short walk up the Outlook Path, easily accessible from all campsites, provides a panoramic, horizon-to-horizon view of the Milky Way galaxy and millions of stars.
During the daytime, have your camera ready for the wildlife that frequents the area! A quiet observer with a sharp eye might spot wildlife such as elk, white tailed deer, mule deer, wild burros, jackrabbits, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, bobcats, javalinas, porcupines, foxes, free range cattle and horses, wild turkeys, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, Gambrel quail, roadrunners, hummingbirds and more.
Though tucked away from the noise, lights and hustle and bustle, 16 Peaks Camp is conveniently located for nearby outings. ATVing, hiking, canoeing and fishing are mere minutes away in the beautiful Kaibab National Forest. Within the Ponderosa forests, with hundreds of ATV trails to explore, you can find retired cowboy camps and ranches, hidden springs, petroglyphs and wildlife, like elk and deer.
16 Peaks Camp offers the following:
4 graveled pull-through sites
For those traveling with another camper group:
- The Howard Mesa site is long enough for 2 RV’s (each 40’ max, including truck). (Additional charge for the additional RV)
- The Sitgreaves graveled pull-around site has an un-graveled companion site, the Bill Williams site. The Bill Williams Site would accomodate a tent/ camper van.
6 un-graveled pull-in sites, perfect for small trailers, camper vans and tents.
In a true boondocking fashion, there are no electrical hook-ups, water, black tank dumping or trash dumpsters available. However, all of those services are available nearby, on Route 64.
Cell phone service is available to Verizon and T-Mobile customers (Verizon is typically the strongest signal), and internet access is available to those with Starlink accounts/ hardware.
