For a true “ghost stories by the campfire" experience, you really can’t top Mammoth Cave Campground.

Home of the largest cave system in the world, the Mammoth Cave Park transports its visitors to Middle Earth (hobbits not included, sadly) for ranger-led tours. When you’re feeling a bit Vitamin D-deficient, the rest of the park offers nearly 84 miles of trails—many of which are bike- and horse-friendly—and more than 30 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers, favorites of boaters and fishers/lovers of muskellunge, bluegill, catfish, bass, perch, and crappie.

We tent camped for two nights at this campground mid March. Lovely, well kept park. Not too busy on the grounds, the facilities were clean and taken care of daily. You can buy bio-degradable firewood bricks on site for about $8 a load. If you want a natural wood fire, you have to forage for it or buy locally. Tickets for cave tours were sold out the first day so we hiked the trails, which turned out to be AWESOME. Highly recommend. Buy tickets for the cave ahead of time online, it was definitely worth seeing for $23 per person. A KY camping gem for sure, will be back!

Fills up fast during events at the park, online booking is best to be safe.

Fun place to explore and an easy location to check out the largest cave network in North America. Bring a jacket for the caves though.

My girlfriend and I drove across the country, and this was one of our favorite spots we camped. We were there on a particularly quiet night and we wish our schedule would have let us stay a few more nights! You definitely must take a tour (or two) of the caves!
