Flamingo Campground is on the southernmost tip of mainland Florida, jutting up to the Florida Bay with the Gulf of Mexico shimmering right on the horizon.

It’s a bit of a trek to get to the very bottom of the States (go figure) but well worth the journey. The campground is 38 miles south from the main park entrance and has 234 drive-up sites, 40 walk-up sites, 3 group sites, and more than 100 RV sites. Despite being able to accommodate so many campers, advance reservations are highly recommended--it’s a very popular spot. There is a tremendous amount to do during your stay. Flamingo connects to Ten Thousand Islands, a “99-mile wilderness waterway” (how cool does that sound?), so kayaking and fishing are big draws. But there’s also great hiking, tons of wildlife, an amphitheater with ranger-guided programs, bike and canoe rentals within 10 miles, and more. Flamingo features solar-powered showers, a marina store, drinking water, and flush toilets. During the wet summer months parts of the campground are closed.

One of my favorite camping trips ever. I came here after a storm had rolled through so a lot of the amenities and features of the park were closed, but they had just cleared some of the walk in camp sites. Getting to see the sunset and rise over the water was amazing. Add to it the clear skies and stars at night, I was in heaven. Also had a visitor while I was warming up an MRE that decided to eat his fish while I had dinner also.

We happened here the day after a tropical storm. A ranger told us we'd been super lucky, that normally he wouldn't stop between the building and his car for ANY reason because the bugs were so bad. He said we had three days to enjoy it before the hatch. We took him at his word, enjoyed the swamp tour, then booked it out on day three. Other sites we saw which you should know about: pygmy rattle snake & scorpion on one evening bathroom run. No barefoot trodding around here!

We went over Christmas, and the campground was virtually empty. We did have a surprise visitor at our campfire, which was a little tree frog that jumped into my daughter's hair, so that will always be memorable. Make sure you use bug spray on your legs. Our legs were thoroughly devoured by no seems, and we itched for weeks afterwards. If not for these bugs, I would highly recommend this campground!

Bug spray. The nastiest most chemical filled one you can find. And soak in it. Helps a little. I know it's not always this bad but the last time was unbearable.

During the winter months, Flamingo is packed to the gills. Only a handful of the RV sites have electrical hookups, there is no water or sewer hookup, but there is a dump station which provides water as well. During the summer months, the mosquito population is unbearable. Bring heavy outer clothing to put over regular clothes including head cover - yes, it is THAT bad. Also, many of the electrical outlets are turned off in summer - you may find 2 or 3 that actually work. Despite all that, Flamingo is my getaway - with my dogs - for holiday like 4th of July (no fireworks!). Primitive, but peaceful.
