Maverick's Rest - Alpaca Farm Stay

6 sites · RVs, Tents10 acres · Peterborough, SA
Welcome to Maverick's Rest, a serene escape tucked away on the outskirts of Peterborough, South Australia, and connected with our working alpaca farm and newly planted lavender paddocks. Only 700m off the main Petersburg Road (entry off Dawson Road), Our bush campsites offer a blend of natural beauty, rustic charm, and unforgettable experiences, with each carefully positioned amongst old native pines, offering views of both sunrise and sunset, along with views of open farmland, distant hills, and animals doing their thing. Each site features a level pad to keep you out of the dirt and the prickles, while defining your spot. There are also firepits and bins on each site. We currently require all campers to be fully self-contained, providing their own toilet, water, and power for a true off-grid experience. We are a work-in-progress and constantly chipping away at making things even better! The centrepiece of the campsite is an absolutely stunning stone ruin. We wish the walls could talk to tell us its story! We are currently working on making this space accessible to all our guests - with a communal fire pit and seating areas opening soon. In the mean time fell free to have a look through, it makes for gorgeous photos. Want more? - Add on an Alpaca Meet and Greet Experience, where you can meet and hand-feed our friendly alpaca herd, capturing selfies and learning fascinating facts about these amazing creatures. We are a working alpaca farm and during this experience you will meet our alpacas, llamas, camels and naughty pig! Book here as an add-on for a discounted rate and to have this experience outside of our normal opening hours if you are travelling through on days our Farm Shop is closed. Late afternoon is always a busy time with feeding all the different animals and you and the kids could be involved in that if you wish as part of this experience. - Indulge in our breakfast pack, featuring farm-fresh eggs, bacon, and yummy sausages from our award winning butcher. Planning a group getaway? Take advantage of our group booking options and have the entire camp to yourselves, accommodating up to 8-10 vehicles for an exclusive retreat. Get in touch with us to find out more about these options. We are pet-friendly, however, please note that all animals must be supervised and kept on a lead at all times. As a working farm, we kindly ask that you refrain from allowing your animals to interact with ours for everyone's safety and peace of mind. Only 2.5km from the centre of the main street, use us as a base to explore Peterborough and surrounds. Escape the ordinary and create lasting memories at Maverick's Rest as you travel through our region! PS: We have a number of very very special and fun trees in the stand of old trees around the camp sites. You may come across them during your stay! More details are sent through to you after booking. PPS: Maverick was the name of our favourite stud male alpaca, and the dad to many of our babies. He was on TV, in weddings and the star of many a photo shoots. A true character, you would have loved him - just like we hope you love this campsite.

Wilkydoo Equine Connection

4 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents14 acres · Wilmington, SA
Your site will be near a dry creek bed near large trees in an open space where you may explore freely within the Creek Paddock which is about 5 acres. This is a horse property of about 15 acres, so getting close to a horse is a strong possibility. Sunset and sunrise on the Flinders Ranges are beautiful, as are the morning clouds when they push up over the ranges. Mt Remarkable and the range running northward is what you will see. You will be greeted by wildlife, including Kangaroo and Euro, bird life, and many smaller critters who may be surreptitiously checking you out. The site is located about 200 meters from the main house. This is a natural space so the ground is undulating. Vans and campers will be able to level without issue providing you carry items to help you with this. The access is year-round with the exception of extreme fire danger periods.

The best camping near Mount Remarkable National Park guide

Overview

About

About 50 kilometres southeast of Port Augusta and 270 kilometres north of Adelaide, Mount Remarkable National Park contains some spectacular canyons and is a popular wildlife-spotting and hiking destination, with short and long trails. There are several campsites as well as cabins for travellers who want a bit more comfort. The park is a must-visit stop on road trips through South Australia, or because it’s about three hours’ drive north of Adelaide, it can also be visited on a weekend trip from the city.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for families: Large Mambray Creek Campground has flushing toilets and showers
  • Best for quiet nights: Baroota Campground has just 10 sites.
  • Best for groups: Alligator Lodge sleeps up to 10 people in 3 rooms.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Check the availability on the dates you want to visit–certain campgrounds and accommodation are sometimes closed for repairs or for seasonal or weather-related reasons.
  2. Book campgrounds and cabins online via the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia website. You can choose your dates and number of people in your party, and adjust according to availability.
  3. Campgrounds and cabins are most popular in the spring and autumn, so book as far in advance if possible if you want to visit in these seasons, or if your group is large.

When to go

April to October is the best time to visit Mount Remarkable National Park for camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Temperatures are most comfortable then. Summers can be extremely hot and dry, and the risk from bushfires is very high. The park is closed when the fire risk reaches “catastrophic” levels. Most campers won’t find sleeping in a tent or hiking to be comfortable in the summer.

Know before you go

  • Bring plenty of water when camping and hiking in the park. There are some water points within the park but the availability of water depends on seasonal rainfall and shouldn’t be relied upon.
  • Wheelchair-accessible toilets can be found at the Mambray Creek Campground and at Willowie. Other locations in the park have basic toilets.
  • Campers should bring their own firewood, as gathering it isn’t allowed in the park. Fires aren’t allowed during bushfire danger season.
  • The park is home to a lot of wildlife, and much of it isn’t shy. Look out for goannas, emus, kookaburras, echidnas, parrots, and eagles.
