The best camping near Panola Mountain State Park guide

Overview

About

Located fifteen minutes from Atlanta, this park is an easily-accessed, family-friendly retreat. There is plenty to keep you busy: angling, boating, hiking, and biking.

Check out the park's range of organized activities, with everything from tree-climbing to archery. Trails through the scenic forest allow you to keep fit and explore.

While in the area, you can explore the wider Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Take a hike on this iconic mountain, spot some wildlife, and visit a historic monastery.

In the park itself, you can wander around the 100-acre outcrop of Stone Mountain. Try to spot some rare plants, birds and other wildlife as you go. If you're a beginner, there are ranger-led hikes to show you the best stuff.

The park offers five primitive campsites, all of which boast scenic, natural locations close to the lake. Two of the campsites share a fire pit for outdoor fun, and all have picnic tables. At busy times of the year, you should book in advance.

When to go

The best time to visit Panola Mountain State Park is during spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers lush greenery but can be hot and humid, while winter provides stark beauty, though some activities may be limited.
