This area was known by the Native Americans as "Pocatalico" (land of the fat doe), and first settled by Europeans around 1890. The property itself was first settled by a man named Mayford Jones, who set the first stones here around 1910. A Jenny Lynn style farmhouse was built and the property was known as one of the best developed farms in the area. Today, the forest has returned to what was once pasture land on the majority of the 100 acre plot, and a small but intensive sustainable forest farm has been taking shape since 2013 under the current host and occupant, who prefers the term "steward" rather than "owner".

I have discovered a screenhouse is a way to be outside but still be protected from the elements...raining? Not a problem! You can move around and make preparations or relax and play games. Presenting a 10x12 rustic screened cabin located near everything you want to do!
Inside the cabin you will find a full sized bed, table and two chairs, and a countertop for preparing meals. Outside you will find a fire pit and two stools. Your own private shower and toilet are just a short walk in the main house.
Walking distance to the New River Gorge Visitors Center and Bridge, Endless Wall and trails are just a mile away.
The cabin is tucked into the trees, with a view of nothing but trees on three sides! You will however hear a bit of traffic noise.

Weekend Trip to Shady Retreat
I have been a Hipcamper for a few years and Lynn has been my best host by far! She is very friendly, inviting and informative! She will invite you into her home and treat you like family from the go. Get ready to also meet some cute cats!
She has put her heart and soul into providing a cool, safe and natural environment. The tree house and amenities are well planned out. There was a tour given upon arrival of the grounds and specifics of the tree house. Lynn has plenty of suggestions on how to enjoy Bridge Day and the area in general.

Weekend Trip to Shady Retreat
Lynn is an absolute delight! She greets you at your arrival to give a tour of the space! She provides you with lighting, cooking ware, chairs, grill/fire pit and wonderful company! My friend and I hiked every trail possible in the 3 days we spent there and always came back to a cozy, quiet space to relax at. Loved my first experience at the New River Gorge!! Thank You For Everything Lynn!!

Weekend Trip to Shady Retreat
Our first time camping and Lynn’s place exceeded our expectations. So peaceful, loved the gardening, and even woke up to deer in the yard. Great privacy and truly everything we needed. Perfect balance of camping and connivence. About 5 min drive to every activity we needed.

1 night at 5 Leaf Farm
We had a great stay at the treehouse. Rob, the host welcomed us and made sure we had everything we needed. Our bed was comfortable and the toilet/shower area was within feet. We enjoyed spending time in the hammocks beneath the treehouse and the artisian drinking water provided was most refreshing. The property is very peaceful and we enjoyed the walk through the woods to the waterfall area. The dogs and cats on staff were spot on as well. We would definitely return and highly reccommend.

Weekend Trip to Shady Retreat
Camped overnight for a weekend trip to New River Gorge, one of the best hip camp experiences we've had so far!
Host was terrific, cooking amenities top-notch, comfortable bed, and friendly local cats.
Access to a full bathroom with running water was a blessing, and the space is beautiful.
Proximity to everything in the park is the biggest plus, you are next to EVERYTHING. 11/10, we will stay here again for sure.

We loved our time on Lynn’s land! Lynn is the most generous and knowledgeable host we could have asked for :) She had plenty of suggestions, tips, and ideas about the area, making our experience even better than we planned!
The place is a short drive or walk to some of the key spots in the area, but is quiet and peaceful.

Amazingly beautiful location! The waterfall and cove area was a short hike away from the main house, and is totally worth going to even when it's just a trickle. There are a lot of carpenter bees and wasps living in the treehouse, but no one got stung and we coexisted well. Just something to think about if you are afraid of flying, stinging insects. The shower in the bathhouse is great, and the camping toilet worked well enough. Rob is a great host! He was communicative and always answered our questions quickly. The farm dogs are friendly and adorable, but will rush your car to greet you which might be overwhelming to some dogs. Totally would recommend staying here overall.
