Explore the rugged trails and vast wilderness of Utah’s Uinta Mountains.
Kamas’ tagline, “The Gateway to the Uinta Mountains,” says it all. Less than an hour’s drive east of Salt Lake City, the suburban town is hemmed in on all sides by mountains, lakes, and state and national parkland. There’s little to get excited about in Kamas itself, although the small town is well-equipped for mountaineers and has everything you’ll need to prepare for your wilderness adventures. Then, it’s time to hit the road—the Mirror Lake Highway Scenic Byway takes you right through the heart of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, where you can take your pick of hiking trails and remote campgrounds. For low-key outdoor adventures, there’s also lakeside camping at Jordanelle State Park to the west of town, where boating, water-skiing, and fishing are the main pastimes. Winter sports and golf are on offer at nearby Wasatch Mountain State Park, while Rockport State Park is a popular spot for fishing.
