Named “The Camp” by Mexican cowboys who used to set up camp in the town during cattle drives, El Campo remains a welcoming pitstop for campers to this day. Just an hour’s drive from both Houston and the Gulf Coast, you’ll be within easy reach of the city’s foodie scene and Space Center, as well as the sandy beaches of Matagorda Bay. But the appeal of El Campo itself is peace and quiet. Pitch your tent or park your RV at one of the town’s many campgrounds and enjoy rural life in the country town, or go kayaking, fishing, and hiking at nearby Lake Texana. There are several RV parks and Hipcamps in and around town, some with full hookups and pull-through sites with plenty of space for big rigs, and others with luxury facilities, a swimming pool, and cottage rentals.
