Located approximately 60 miles from Crater Lake National Park, 30 miles from Lava Beds National Monument, and 12 miles from Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, our retreat offers unparalleled access to a variety of natural wonders. Within just 30 minutes, you'll find numerous opportunities for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and biking, with private access to miles of hiking trails on public land right from the campsite. Keep your eyes peeled for the impressive eagle activity in the area, as bald and golden eagles are frequently spotted soaring above or perched nearby. At night, you may have the opportunity to join us for star viewing parties under our dark, expansive sky—an experience you won't forget. While our site offers access to seclusion, it's not entirely secluded on its own. Nestled at the bottom of a pasture in a farming area, it's within sight of the owner and a neighbor. However, rural living offers a sense of privacy, allowing you to relax and be yourself amidst nature. Keep in mind that you may encounter bugs, coyotes, deer, and some nearby farming activity during your stay. Our communal camping area features level ground, fire pit, potable water spigot, camp toilet, and a picnic table. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be leashed or kenneled on the property—feel free to let them off-leash on the adjacent public lands. Owners are available to provide information and maps for hiking and outdoor recreation activities. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Shasta from your campsite, with seasonally flooded fields adding to the picturesque scenery. You're also welcome to explore the hills nearby, offering even more breathtaking vistas to discover.

Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place.We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." Small but mighty butte offers panoramic views of the Sprague River Valley. 7 acres of gently sloping terrain with grassland, rabbitbrush, manzanita, gooseberries, juniper, and bitter crab apples, bordering Fremont Winema National Forest. Site is well suited to meditation, hiking, leave no trace camping, orienteering, geocaching, stargazing. Good base camp during hunting season. Highly recommended for folks thinking of moving to the area. Off grid paradise! The feel of this land varies based on your view. On the lower east side by the road you will be able to see the neighbor and his off grid solar setup. On the west side you see national forest property, and your view of neighbor and road will be blocked by the Butte. Hike up to the lower Butte or climb to the upper Butte to see lovely views of the Sprague River Valley, which includes farms, forest and neighboring parcels. Please read the hosts rules section for more detailed info. Please make sure to bring a 4x4 vehicle as the road quality can be extremely rutted and rocky for a brief stretch on both routes in to the property. Recent update (2024): There seem to be two different pages where you can find this property now - on one of them, hipcamp includes pictures from both of the properties that I have listed, along with the property description. (Kingfisher property no longer campable due to the Golden fire in 2023). If you are looking at a page that has Oregon for Everyone at the top and Canyon Butte High Desert Camping by the photos, with an option to click on 10 photos, that is the correct page and info. If your page says Oregon for Everyone but no specific site name, and gives you the option to click on 18 photos, you are seeing photos of both properties.
