Enjoy the outdoors without compromising on creature comforts in this Central Oregon city.
Central Oregon's biggest city offers easy access to some of the best outdoor recreation opportunities in the state, from spring and fall rock climbing at Smith Rock State Park, summertime paddling on the Deschutes River, and winter snowsports on the slopes of Mt. Bachelor, in the Deschutes National Forest. It’s also a great place for a cabin getaway, and while two of the state parks in the area—notably Cove Palisades State Park and LaPine State Park—offer cabins for rent, some of which are even pet-friendly, there are also plenty of private options in and around town, ideal for travelers looking for a quiet alternative to campground cabin life. For something more remote, you can head west to the Willamette National Forest or northeast to the Ochoco National Forest. Both have a mix of privately owned and US Forest Service-managed cabins for rent, though the latter often fill up well in advance.
