Trade NYC’s boroughs for another set of five: mountains, lakes, beaches, farms, and rivers.
Take your pick: Cabin rentals outside of New York City range from creekside log cabins to tiny homes in wooded areas. Leave the five boroughs for a getaway that makes camping as easy as taking a vacation. The further you get from the city, the more options you'll have, though Harriman State Park is one of New York's largest state parks—and only 30 miles outside the city. Spend a weekend exploring up to 200 miles of the park's trails, or try your hand at just one hike, with a section of the Appalachian Trail. Parts of the A.T. pass through New York City's surrounding areas, accessible via the Metro-North or NJ Transit. If you're up for a drive, head to Vernon, New Jersey's Stairway to Heaven" trail. Located just shy of the NY-NJ border, the path consists of a flat boardwalk primed for bird and turtle sightings, as well a later peak that overlooks rural farmlands.
