Welcome to your own private forest escape. At Vida Bonita Pecos, our two campsites are designed for those seeking quiet, space, and solitude. Set apart from each other and completely removed from any other campers, you’ll feel like you have the entire forest to yourself.
Each site is nestled beneath towering Ponderosa and Blue Spruce pines and Aspens. They offer level ground for tents, grill for cooking, and easy access to nearby hiking trails, Cowles Ponds, and the soothing sounds of the Pecos River. Whether you’re stargazing by your campfire or sipping coffee with the morning breeze, this is where relaxation lives.
Your campsite is part of the Vida Bonita Pecos complex, which includes beautifully remodeled cabins and the remodeled Ponderosa Lodge. While you’ll have total privacy at your site, guests are welcome to explore designated areas of the property, our trout pond, and free roaming chickens and turkeys.
We don’t pack campers in. No RVs. No generators. Just you, the trees, and a sky full of stars.

Wander our land to enjoy various level hiking trails including a 20 minute hike to a creek and waterfall in the forest (some steep spots and creek is intermittent) or climb up Shaggy Peak (seasoned hikers only please).
IMPORTANT: We are up 1.3 miles of dirt road (with 5-7+% grade in a few short stretches) and are not near public transportation so you will need your own vehicle! Be aware that the roads can be snowy, icy or muddy and rutted ( 4-wheel or All-trak recommended in certain times of year). We don’t guarantee the road will be plowed.
We generally close for the season due to cold weather around Halloween and reopen just before Memorial Day.

This is a primitive shelter. There is no running water nor electricity (aside from a solar light). The solar will charge your phone so bring your cord!
It's just like camping but with walls and a roof over your head - and the benefit of having no other campers around. You might see an occasional hiker with their dog. If you have a dog, take note. This site is completely fenced in so that your fur baby can safely roam.
There is no heating or cooling. The desert can get cold at night. With enough notice, a portable propane heater can be provided with for an additional charge.
Hipcampers are kindly asked to park just outside our gate and embark on a picturesque 3/4 mile hike back to the shelter. The flat hike offers scenic views and adds to the adventure of your stay. PLEASE clean up after your pup.

You have access to miles of walkable dirt roads right from the door, and there are trails to BLM land nearby. 10 minute drive from access to the Rio Grande Gorge, and an easy 25 minute drive into Taos Ski Valley for snow fun and hiking. 15 min north of downtown Taos.
The cabin is divided into two sides. One side is a bedroom/bathroom suite with a comfortable queen size bed and a bathroom (with an awesome standing shower).
On the other side, separated by an exterior door, you'll find a cozy space for dining and relaxing, a couch (with a small fold-out mattress), and a kitchenette.
This means you move from the living room/kitchenette to the bedroom/bathroom by walking outside under the covered patio. While it's a bit unusual, we really enjoy it, and so do 99% of our guests. If you like being outdoors, and enjoy having separate areas for sleeping vs hanging out and cooking, you'll enjoy it too.
The kitchenette includes a mini fridge, a large double sink, an electric cooktop, varied coffee supplies, and all the essential cooking amenities. No need to run to the store just for basics like salt, pepper, or oil. Plus some less basic items, like a variety of Trader Joes spices + emergency snacks. The Blackstone outdoor griddle is a versatile cooking amenity, where you can make a full breakfast spread, delicious fajitas, and really anything in between.
This is a somewhat remote high desert area, with all that entails. There are birds, bugs, and lots of other wildlife around. You may hear coyotes singing late at night or early in the morning.
The last 1.5 miles of the drive are on a maintained dirt road. You don't need 4WD or a lifted vehicle to get here, although you may need it for other areas of Taos.
The guest cabin shares the 10 acres with the main house, where we live. If we're out of town, other guests may be staying in the main house. The cabin and house are well separated by both a large garage and latilla privacy fences.
The cabin is dog friendly, as we have two of our own and know the challenges of traveling with dogs.

The area is absolutely beautiful!! And Duc was amazing and accommodating! We felt welcomed and taken care of. Our cabin was lovely, and the area of the river we could walk to was absolutely stunning! And our boys loved feeding the animals and even got to help collect eggs. We couldn’t have had a better time!! Would love to come back and spend more time!

Weekend Trip to Camp Across From Pecos River
Nice, quiet site. Very comfortable accommodations with everything we needed for our stay. We were able to walk to the river as well as the trails up by Cowles Pond. We also enjoyed hiking the Cave Creek trail which was just a few minutes up the road. Duc was a great host and taught us how to build the best campfire of our lives.

We found a diamond. Beautiful and quiet in a sometimes crowded canyon. Duc has created a perfect getaway if you are looking for solice, hiking, fishing or the ideal anniversary hideout. We had a blast and cannot wait to go back for a week or weekend. Loved the dogs!!

Loved being able to hike in, and my dogs getting to run free on the property. It was so quiet, I was disoriented for a bit. I only stayed for a night, but would stay longer in the future to take advantage of the land navigation and other similar features. Really kind host, and cozy space. Gravel road on the way in, but I drive a Camaro and had no issues

Group trip
We stayed at one of Duc's duplex's. It was a great launch point for our backpacking trip and also a great stay over after the backpacking. Duc and Erikah are nice people that make sure you have a nice stay. The setting is beautiful--you can walk right down to the Pecos River and might even be escorted by their friendly, lovable Great Pyranees dogs --Luna and Max. Have fun!

We loved our time at this cabin! It was so unique and different than other spots we’ve stayed at. The hike made it extra special and gave us the privacy we were looking for. Lynne has the cabin supplied with everything you will need. It’s very cozy and we even had a big storm come through one night. We felt very safe and secure enjoy it from inside! The sunsets on the ridge are beautiful. And our dog loved having her own yard to hang out in. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Lynne!

Weekend Trip to Taos Goji Farm & Eco Lodge
The Taos Goji property truly makes this Hipcamp worth it. There are several community spaces, including two soaking tubs and a sauna, which made our trip. The cabin itself was just enough for comfort. My partner and I were able to cook a meal, though we would recommend bringing your own spices, and enjoyed a cozy evening of soaking in the hot tub and hot veggies. The space is heated through several different elements, and the caretaker was quick to assist us when we got cold. In general, the investment for the duplex cabin seems steep, but if you are able to take time out of your travels to enjoy the property and it's amenities, it quickly holds generous value.
