Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family-owned business since 1984. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter who came to Bethel was the first doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman.
All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River. Our private established skiing/walking trails meander through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges and Mt. Washington. Nearby is Middle Intervale Farm, owned by John Carter, who produces his own vegetables and meat. He has a small, self-serve farm stand right on Intervale Road, next to Carter's.

Weekend Trip to Country Meadow Glamping Cabin
We had a lovely overnight! It was peaceful, clean, quiet, and secluded, too! We also loved the fresh cedar smell of the cabin! The directions and signage were great and the instructions in the cabin were very clear, too! The property was absolutely beautiful, with wide green meadows that made it feel so peaceful and inviting.

5 nights at Laughing Bear Cottages - Squam Lake
I stayed at the Papa Bear cottage for 5 days with my two teenage sons. The cottage was small but well-maintained, clean, and thoughtfully provisioned with everything needed for basic cooking. The lake is beautiful, and it’s a wonderful area for paddling and hiking. It was 90 degrees during our visit, but I was pleasantly surprised by how cool and comfortable the cottage was even during the day. There is quite a bit of traffic noise, especially in the morning, but we got used to it.

Authentic, simple, and a highly desirable location. The cottage provided amazing access to the lake - with kayaks, bar-b-que grill (and all tools), full kitchen, and an ideal location all made our visit wonderful. The cabin was very located and close to top notch restaurants. Papa Bear cabin is the real deal and the family that maintains it knows this and celebrates it. They clearly love the place. We 100% would return again.

2 nights at Stillness Wilderness Properties
This cabin feels rustic yet has many of the comforts of home. It was very clean and the pictures accurately represent the space. My wife and I stayed for two nights and really appreciated the washer and dryer after tent camping for several days. The keurig coffee maker and nice selection of coffees was really nice, too. The spiral staircase is pretty tight leading up to the bed in the loft, but the bed is comfortable and the fan made for nice sleeping. Lots of great hiking close by, too. We'd definitely stay again.

Great little cabin for very basic needs in the Squam lakes area.
Bed was comfortable, kitchen is a little cramped but I made it work.
Nice shaded area kept the cabin cooler during the warmer days.
The private beach was a very short walk across the street and I made great use of the kayak.
The "fire pit" I deemed unsafe to use as the area for Papa Bear is quite small and they had it near there wooden fence and cabin 5' spacing between both. I could easily see either the fence or the cabin easily catching fire.
The mama bear site has a much better area for having a fire and it also has a picnic table.
The cabin is close to everything, there is a great store right down the road that makes amazing sandwiches and baked goods.
A very old school shur fine store for dinner essentials and Command Man locations on every corner for food.

We loved everything about the cabin. The drive in, the beautiful grounds, the darling cabin, which was easy to find and was priced just right. The cabin was cozy, nice, relatively new, clean and warm. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was clean and the hosts were very kind. Loved the firepit and the fireflies too!

These little cabins are so adorable! Very clean and thoughtfully appointed. I can see why people return year after year. I especially loved the back porch right on the river. It was too chilly to spend much time out there, but having my morning coffee out there with the sound of the flowing river was so peaceful.
The owner was lovely and thoughtful; when I arrived, she'd been in my cabin turning the heater on to ensure it was cozy for me.
I definitely recommend this place!

I am in love with this cabin! It was warm and cozy. Having a view of the flowing Pemi surrounded by feet of snow was absolutely special. The cabin had everything I needed for a relaxing retreat to recharge before hitting the slopes nearby. Can’t wait to visit again.

Camp Fern was the perfect getaway. Anne fired up the woodstove & I arrived to a warm & cozy cottage. My favorite spot was watching the sun set from the upstairs. I enjoyed the quiet and beauty of nature. Fantastic communication from Anne. I look forward to returning some day.

Weekend Trip to Carter's XC Ski Center
Everything about Stonewall Cabin was just what we hoped and expected. The interior was impressively clean when we arrived. The setting (in the woods, right on the trail network) was pretty and convenient for XC skiing. Highway noise (from quite a few miles away) is audible from outside the cabin, but otherwise, the setting feels very secluded and natural. There was plenty of firewood and water in the provided jugs, and the gas lamps provided good light for reading and cooking (we brought our headlamps, but only used them for nighttime trips to the outhouse). Great stock of board games, too!
