Remote private tract in northern Michigan with Portage Creek to camp at, right up close. No neighbors, no other campers! 10 miles from Grayling so you can run into town for needed supplies with little time or effort. Bring your kayaks and swimsuit for a quick splash. The creek is mostly shallow with some deeper spots. There are downed trees so the kids can kayak without going too far away but they can go out of line of sight and hearing, so please be watchful. The last ½ mile road in can be very sandy in spots or sometimes flooded so you are encouraged to call or enquire prior to arrival, 4WD recommended for towing an RV. We recommend your first arrival during daylight hours so you can see the entrance of the property. The non-maintained county road, the last ½ mile in is typically not passable during winter and snow seasons except by snowshoe or snowmobile due to the snow level. Never leave children or pets unattended! Be aware of the chance encounter with an endangered massasauga rattler, it may be endangered but it is still poisonous and they have been seen on and around the property before. Ticks are on the rise, and the springtime can be very buggy, and mosquito-y with the surrounding swampy areas. There are bear, coyote, and an assortment of other creatures big and small. This is a wilderness area and so please be aware of wild animals. Never leave your small contained fire unattended at the firepit and watch for sparks, completely douse the fire before you leave as this is a fire-prone area. No fires outside the firepit for safety reasons and fire hazards. If you want firewood here in Grayling, there are a few places that sell it. There is down debris in our woods but as the summer goes by, it may be picked through. You can pull and circle through the open area with your RV, or you can tuck into the RV / camping spot. There is enough room for 5 or 6 cars but campers may crowd that a bit. If you are tent camping, you are welcome to set up elsewhere on the property. There are trails throughout the property and you may see the ‘No Trespassing’ signs all along the perimeter of the 23.7 acres. The toilet is now working again, but we ask that you not overtaxed it ;p . The small cabin is fairly stocked with pots and pans, good for campfire cooking. Picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate on site for your use. There are tons of nearby outdoor recreational opportunities and water bodies very close by, or you can spend your time on this private tract. The military board land and small arms range is just past the road to the west, you may hear small arms practice at times, the sound of freedom.

Weekend Trip to Barney Lake Vista

Our long weekend at Barney Lake Vista was everything we hoped for and more. The fall colors were absolutely stunning — miles and miles of golden and red trees surrounding the lake. The site itself was private, peaceful, and perfectly maintained. Even the toilet was spotless and just the right distance from camp. The sounds of nature were constant and comforting — birds chirping all day, a few gobbling turkeys, and at night, the distant howls of what we think was a pack of coyotes. My wife joked they were celebrating something. It was beautiful to listen to, far enough away to keep the night peaceful. The night sky was incredible — so many stars, it felt magical. Our two senior dachshunds loved it too, especially soaking up the sun in the crisp fall air. Adam and Sarah were wonderful hosts — friendly, helpful, and thoughtful. They even dropped off a bunch of dry wood after a rainy day without us asking. It made our nights by the fire perfect. Having grocery stores just 10 minutes away was super convenient, too. Beautiful setting, and a well-equipped rustic cabin! Jeremey was incredibly helpful answering our questions ahead of the trip, and made sure everything was ready for our arrival. So peaceful and relaxing! Our husky Tala loved being able to explore. We loved the covered deck, the sauna, and being able to use the canoes on the crystal clear river. Can’t wait to visit again during different times of the year!

Weekend Trip to Tawas Pointe In The Woods

This is a wonderful spot to camp! The back yard is spacious, with a hammock, wind chimes, fire pit, and table. Behind the back yard are some trails that go deep into the north woods. The host was very gracious, taking time to check in with me while she was travelling out of state. Also, the beach at Tawas Point just became one of my favorite beaches in Michigan, up there with Oval Beach in Saugatuck and the "secret spot" off Old Freesoil Road in the Manistee National Forest, between Ludington and Manistee, north of Big Sable Point. It is a fascinating little piece of land that sticks down into Tawas Bay.

We had an amazing romantic getaway at Adam and Sara’s Barney Lake Vista. The overlooking view showcased the stunning fall colors across the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop for our stay. In the morning, we were delighted to see a flock of turkeys running through the open field below, adding to the charm of the location. The directions were easy to follow and find, ensuring a hassle-free arrival. The outhouse was perfectly clean, and putting the truck in four-wheel drive made easy work getting up the approach. Overall, it was a perfect weekend getaway.

Genuinely such an amazing experience at Camp Bear Paw!! Kevin and Lori are phenomenal hosts. It’s truly a hidden gem. There’s activities for kids all ages and adults. Anything you may have forgotten (chairs, ice, worms, fishing poles , cooking supplies , etc.) they have it all! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or hosts. Had a great time here! We rented the RV on site, it was lovely and easy to set up in, and although we didn't use it having the TV with movies was a cute touch. The outdoor shower was great, and the Outhouse was well maintained. Close enough to town to get anything we needed, and nestled in the woods enough for us to find some peace. Wonderful time!
