West of Wichita, Kansas’ jagged Flint Hills begin to give way to the flatlands of the open prairie. Here, the sky just seems bigger, with few distractions on the horizon other than the small town of Kingman. Stop and stay awhile. Explore the charming downtown, where you can step through time in a number of historic buildings. Or, set out to explore the great outdoors. Though the rolling grasslands seem endless, you’ll find lakes and rivers tucked into the prairies. The picturesque Ninnescah River snakes through town. Head to nearby Cheney State Park or Kingman State Fishing Lake for fishing, boating, and more. Stay in a little house–or tent–-on the prairie to enjoy some of Kingman’s camping options. Private campsites offer a quiet place to take in the stars above. You might even hear the coyotes howling. The closest public campground is found at Cheney State Park, which has cabins and tent and RV sites.
