Restorative lakeside escapes await just a short drive from Atlantic, Iowa. Less than 20 minutes to the east, Lake Anita State Park beckons with tranquil waters that are well stocked with prized largemouth bass and bluegill. While anglers reel in dinner, the rest of the group can ride pontoon boats across the lake’s shimmering surface. Retire for the night at the state-park campground that offers full hookups for RVs, modern shower buildings, and flush toilets, and lake access. Families can also enjoy a children’s playground, volleyball court, and swimming beach. The similarly-sized Viking Lake State Park is another terrific spot for family camping about 35 miles south of Atlantic. Cast a line in for red-ear sunfish and bluegill from the six fishing jetties, or meander along the Burr Oak Nature Trail surrounded by abundant wildflowers and local wildlife. The pet-friendly campground offers shaded tent and RV sites with up to 50-amp hookups, back-in sites for big rigs up to 80 feet, dump stations, fire rings, and gorgeous lake views.
