Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon

4 sites · Tents1 acre · Pahoa, HI
Pitch your tent in the garden or park your campervan at the base of our retreat center, Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon. The Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon is a Rebirthing Center offering preparation and support for the transformation of a lifetime! We offer daily classes such as Bikram Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and AcroYoga. We host monthly yoga residencies with daily connection rituals such as Mantra & Meditation, Empathy Exchange, ComeUnity Gardening, & excursions to the local hot springs, black sand beach, and Sunday morning ecstatic dance. We have yearly retreats on the Equinoxes & Solstices, which begin with a 30 day cleanse and culminate with a Gratitude Ceremony on the Summit of Mauna Kea. As a retreat space, we often host guests who are on cleanses and/or dieta, so it is of utmost priority to keep the energy on the land pure and clear. Therefore, there is no smoking of any kind, alcohol consumption, or taking of plant medicine while on site. We ask that you show up with your full presence, without the influence of any other energies. We have quiet hours before 7:30 am and after 7:30 pm to honor the retreat atmosphere. Wi-Fi hours are from 8 am to 5 pm; please let us know if you need the Wi-Fi outside of these hours. We encourage you to leave your devices off as much as possible to receive from the healing frequency of the Earth. The Sanctuary of the Blue Dragon is a also permaculture homestead featuring many hugelkulture garden beds growing staple foods like taro, pumpkin, cassava, sweet potato, and local greens. We have many young fruit trees in the ground and are blessed to have some mature trees currently producing banana, papaya, rollenia, & avocado. In addition to growing food, we are also raising many animals and two children! You will see the girls up early in the morning feeding the bunnies and guinea pigs or playing with our three temple cats. We are committed to living in harmony with the land, and as such we are mostly off-grid and catch our own water. We sort all of our trash meticulously for recycling. Currently plastic is NOT recycled on this island, so our Kuleana (responsibility) is to buy as little plastic as possible. We use only biodegradable and eco-friendly soaps, shampoo, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, etc. It’s a great experience in taking small actions to show our love to the ’āina (the land).

TreeHouse in canopy of trees

1 site · Lodging3 acres · Mountain View, HI
Learn more about this land:Aloha,I built the treehouse to be a very romantic hideaway for myself and my honey, and now that I'm renting it out, the couples and families who have stayed here, including many honeymooners have appreciated the romance of the setting and ambiance. (In fact, we had considered calling it KamaSutreehouse when setting up the website!.) It's not just romantic though it's really fun for the kids. The setting is so private, surrounded by such natural beauty that one cannot help but be inspired. My favorite romantic details are the fireplace and the bed perched high up in the loft where you're surrounded by windows looking out at the moon and stars at night and native trees, birds and cloud formations by day, the low ceilinged double futon bed approached by inside later ( which is mostly for kids) and also accessible by crawling under the Master Bed ( about 5 feet up). The Sky-Walk 90 feet out into the forest is the latest whimsical and fun additions. The location is great it's very private and quiet, hidden in the rainforest yet it's only 3 miles from Volcano Village and 5 miles from the park entrance. Some guests a never leave the Treehouse. The TreeHouse is at 2860 feet above sea level, plus 20 ft. for the TreeHouse, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is at a little over 4000 feet above seas level for the viewing of the glow from the vent at a mile distance, on the edge of the crater. For the most comprehensive information about the island and local area, I recommend the book, The Big Island Revealed. The main attraction locally, of course, is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the hiking thru lava fields, lava tubes and even across the floors of craters. Volcano Village is well known as a premier artist colony and is home to many scientists, as well. Hilo is 25 miles away and has many attractions, including a new, state of the art astronomy museum that shouldn't be missed. And of course the Island is surrounded by beautiful blue ocean and all the activities that go with that.

The Kikala Waterfall Lodge

5 sites · Lodging14 acres · Wainaku, HI
The Kikala Waterfall Lodge at the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve is a lodge nested in a botanical garden and farm dedicated to the preservation of the world's plant biodiversity. Situated on the southeast facing flanks of Mauna Kea overlooking Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast, the bioreserve benefits of a unique climate where the lowland rainforest climate zone (Koeppen climate Zone Af) overlaps with the oceanic temperate mountain zone of Mauna Kea (Koeppen Climate Zone Cfb). The result is a cool and wet climate zone that supports many of the world's endangered palms and conifers. The bioreserve features 14 acres of riverfront Cloud forest. The Kikala river runs through the middle of the bioreserve, so Kikala Waterfall Lodge guests on the bioreserve have private exclusive access to prime waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cloudforest bioreserve isn't just home to botanical wonders, Hawaiian native hawks and many other beautiful Hawaiian birds like to nest in the cloudforest. The lodge community center features a Zendo that can support a contemplative yoga and meditation practice. The Bioreserve features gardens with a Japanese Zen influence to encourage a contemplative retreat experience.

Camp on the rich and power lava flats of the the big island! This lava plot next to the famed lava temple has very basic services. It is close to Pahoa, Uncle Robert’s Night Market, Kalani resort and many magical and hidden treasures of the newest land on earth!Since a spectacular and dramatic trip to big Island a few years back I have had hot lava, the sweetness of the people, food and the power of Maunakea running through my veins.  Equally charming and magical was my incredible host Jade who has made an off the grid home on the lava in Kalapana Gardens. If she is not overbooked, I highly recommend staying with her for at least a couple of nights.  If you stay on my adjacent lava plot in my Eurovan or in your tent or vehicle then you may be able to make arrangements to attend one of her deeply soulful ceremonies.  Other magic in the region may be revealed!Learn more about this land:Camp on the rich and power lava flats of the the big island! Topical Tree Homestead

1 site · Lodging1 acre · Pāhoa, HI
Aloha, I made a lifestyle decision to move to Hawaii in 2005. I fell in love with the Big Island for the first time in 97. Since then I've explored homesteading and a closer connection to our land. I have been building and creating. Now I am ready to share my property with travelers who visit this magical place. I am into a peaceful sustainable existence, that gives rest to a fast moving civilization. Sometimes it is enough to just look at the stars, and here you can see them well, or just return to the original TV, a nice relaxing fire. And I love to cook on the flames, so simple, so good. Sharing food is my favorite form of communion. I love slow cooking, whether it be smoking or stew making. Slower and longer is just better if you ask me. I am a builder, and as a builder the most gratifying thing is to see people enjoying the manifestations that have been created. Sometimes the focus of what it means to construct something for the utilitarian purpose gets lost in the process. But, the magic is always underlying everything, so many times pure serendipity is right there, reminding us. The intention is everything and construed in all the stones carried, wood carved, land sculpted and much, much else. When the energy is pure, then it is easily conveyed or felt. This land is unfolding as the volcano has taught us. All who become part of this history will see how powerful is the asking. My experience here is that there is an instant reflection in the asking. Have fun and come and see...After all this is some of the newest land on this planet.
