Well, the water is black because it is rich with tannins from the headwaters of the Okefenokee Swamp Wildlife Refuge, the largest blackwater swamp in North America, with its peat-filled freshwater. The water is tea-colored but appears black in water over 1' deep. Another question we get often is whether the river is safe to swim in. Of course, it is! In fact, the water might be one of the best types of water to swim/bathe in, due to the rich tannic acid in the water that kills odor-causing bacteria and mosquito larvae. So go ahead and take a dip and let the river wash away your troubles and worries. Is the river shelly/rocky/rough on the feet? It's honestly the opposite. Our property sits on an ancient oceanfront dune formed over 6,000 thousand years ago called "Trail Ridge". We also have a separate acre lot on the edge of a huge forest if you want to go hunting. This is only an 8 minute drive from our property. For cooking we provide options including a charcoal grill, gas grill, charcoal pizza oven and a portable fire ring. We have free fire wood available but you will need a hatchet or some other way to cut it. We do not provide propane or charcoal. Guests are welcome to go fishing here so bring your rods and tackle. Learn more about this land:This is our family’s farm, 92 acres total, 50 leases to a tenant, 40 available for use. On the St. John’s river, with a kayak launch. We raise beef cattle, please coordinate for use of that field. You are welcome to fresh eggs. Do not recommend letting dogs run with cattle and donkeys. Handmade goats milk soap as a booking gift to each group. There’s a single RV hook up for a water and a 30 or 50 amp power. I’velimited to one group per booking, if you’re buddy camping let me know and we can be very accommodating. Livestock on site so I need to have a plan for your group.
