The host(s) will meet you there shortly after passing through the gate and direct you to your site. ----------------------- Camp Penguin at Wandering Penguin Ranch (facebook.com/CampPenguin) in southern Colorado is about a 3 hour drive from the Denver metro area, two hours from Colorado Springs and just under an hour north west of Canon City. We provide a variety of site options to choose from including tent sites, car/van/truck sites, and rustic trailer site options - all with NO amenities (NO electric/septic/water, etc). Additional vehicle parking on the property can be accommodated for groups with more than one vehicle. Please provide type of camper/tent and number of vehicles at booking so hosts can help direct you to the best site option available. Guests can relax around our small pond or roam freely around our 35-acre property. There is both hiking and fishing at Badger Creek only a short drive away. Waugh Mountain State Trust Land is another hiking option and is also just a short drive up the road (*NOTE: the State of Colorado now requires a valid hunting/fishing license to access state trust lands)! Additionally, we are about 45-90 minutes away from a variety of alternative adventures! Some of these include Salida, Cripple Creek, Eleven Mile Reservoir, Paradise Cove Swimming Hole, Florissant Fossil Beds, Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, Manitou Incline, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, Seven Falls, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience, several rafting/zipline and Jeep tour companies, Westcliffe, Bishop Castle and Canon City including Skyline Drive, Tunnel Drive, Royal Gorge Train, Museum of Colorado Prisons and The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Any of these can be done as a day trip or visited while on your way here, or home. (*NOTE: some of these attractions are free, some require a fee and some are seasonal. Upon completion of the City of Aurora's Wild Horse Reservoir in the 2030's, this will be a "waterfront" property. The campsite is equipped with a unique dual purpose wood/propane fire ring - bring your own propane to enjoy campfires while burn bans are in effect. Great hiking opportunities may be found right on the property, and numerous nearby seldom used dirt roads provide exceptional mountain biking opportunities. Close to recreational opportunities in Buena Vista and Salida, as well as Antero, Eleven Mile, and Spinney Mountain Reservoirs. A level site with great access, and can accommodate large RV's and campers. And keep your eyes out - you might just see some Pronghorn passing through the property! Directions from the town of Hartsel: Proceed 2 miles South on State Hwy 9. Turn right (South) on CR 53. Stay right at the fork at 1.3 miles. At 3.9 miles, turn left (East) onto lightly used Shawnee Trail (Note: On occasion due to County grading on CR 53, there will be a small mound to drive over as you enter this left turn). Proceed about one-quarter mile (and past the the POSTED NO TRESPASSING sign just inside the property entrance) to the campsite a bit further on the left.

I have owned the ranch since 2005 and have spent my time re-vitalizing this amazing place. There are even several gravesites on the property from the 1880s. Your glamping/camping site is unequaled on top of a ridge that overlooks the Arkansas Valley and the Town of Salida. The other direction looks at the 14,000 ft Mt Shavano and the iconic Angel of Shavano. Recently added is a central area for all Hipcamp guests that includes an area to play horse shoes and a fire pit. Additional amenities will be added throughout the season!

Our campground is nestled between the granite walls of Taylor Canyon alongside the Taylor River in central Colorado, halfway between Gunnison and Crested Butte, CO. If you've never been to the area, get ready to be amazed, with over 2,500 square miles of public land, 700+ miles of singletrack trail and countless rivers, creeks and lakes to explore. Please contact us before booking if you are seeking a family focused experience - we do not have a kids area or playground and require that children under the age of 16 be in the company of an adult at all times due to our proximity to Co Rd 742 and the Taylor River. No multi-room tents are allowed at camp, we simply don't have the room, the largest tent size we can accommodate is 12'x12' - please inquire if you have specific tent questions. You can check-in with us anytime after 3pm the day of your reservation, please message us if you need to check-in after 8pm. Downtown South Park is just 10 minutes away and offers stores for fishing gear, restaurants, wine bars, and excellent Mexican food. The market is right on 285 Highway, which leads to Denver or Buena Vista. The scenic ride is beautiful. South Park hosts many carnivals with food trucks that serve amazing dishes. Fall in love with South Park, known for gold medal fishing and hot springs within 40 minutes away. Sleep in your RV with the soothing sound of silence to recharge and find peace. There are great hiking trails nearby and a quiet country road for biking. The ski resort in Breckenridge is just 25 minutes away. The towns of Alma and Fairplay have a history of gold dredging, with some placer gold operations still active. This land was part of a mining project, and some mine entrances were closed by my husband when we first moved here. Learn more about this land and Fairplay at the Visitor's Welcome Center in Downtown South Park. There are lots of historic places to explore. Please be aware that this campsite is full of trees and set in a park-like setting, and wildlife is active here 24/7. We only rent two spots and are located near several national forests. Campsite #1 comes with electricity and water. Please bring your own extensions and hoses; if needed, we rent them on site. Check extras for fees. Owner lives in RV. Land will never be left alone someone is always here. Drive up the hill or walk up the hill next to RV to find all amenities, Like bathroom and bear trash. If anyone is blocking your way please let the owner know. No unsupervised fires watered down your fires until is wet. No unsupervised kids or pets. No haunting allow in this land

A brand new Hipcamp site in 2024, on one of the most unique properties in Park County. With only a single Hipcamp site on a large 40 acre property and no neighbors nearby, you'll enjoy a private camping experience in one of the most scenic locations in Colorado. The property is partially wooded, and there is a spectacular view from the top of a prominent hill on the property which is some of the highest ground for miles in all directions. Upon completion of the City of Aurora's Wild Horse Reservoir in the 2030's, this will be a "waterfront" property. On site picnic tables (the lighter colored bench can fold into a table) and a port-a-potty are provided. The campsite is equipped with a unique dual purpose wood/propane fire ring - bring your own propane to enjoy campfires while burn bans are in effect. Great hiking opportunities may be found right on the property, and numerous nearby seldom used dirt roads provide exceptional mountain biking opportunities. Close to recreational opportunities in Buena Vista and Salida, as well as Antero, Eleven Mile, and Spinney Mountain Reservoirs. A level site with great access, and can accommodate large RV's and campers. And keep your eyes out - you might just see some Pronghorn passing through the property! Directions from the town of Hartsel: Proceed 2 miles South on State Hwy 9. Turn right (South) on CR 53. Stay right at the fork at 1.3 miles. At 3.9 miles, turn left (East) onto lightly used Shawnee Trail (Note: On occasion due to County grading on CR 53, there will be a small mound to drive over as you enter this left turn). Proceed about one-quarter mile (and past the the POSTED NO TRESPASSING sign just inside the property entrance) to the campsite a bit further on the left.

If you have purchased wood and there are restrictions/bans, we will gladly apply your wood purchase the rental of a propane pit. Propane fire pit usage may also be restricted by current conditions or state/county restrictions! Fresh eggs are available for purchase (when the girls are cooperating) by the dozen, or half dozen (see "extras"). You are welcome to go "visit" the chickens. Their coop is next to the large blue shop/barn. *UPON ARRIVAL at the property, please WAIT INSIDE our main gate (unless otherwise directed via prior communication with host). The host(s) will meet you there shortly after passing through the gate and direct you to your site. ----------------------- Camp Penguin at Wandering Penguin Ranch (facebook.com/CampPenguin) in southern Colorado is about a 3 hour drive from the Denver metro area, two hours from Colorado Springs and just under an hour north west of Canon City. We provide a variety of site options to choose from including tent sites, car/van/truck sites, and rustic trailer site options - all with NO amenities (NO electric/septic/water, etc). Additional vehicle parking on the property can be accommodated for groups with more than one vehicle. Please provide type of camper/tent and number of vehicles at booking so hosts can help direct you to the best site option available. Guests can relax around our small pond or roam freely around our 35-acre property. There is both hiking and fishing at Badger Creek only a short drive away. Waugh Mountain State Trust Land is another hiking option and is also just a short drive up the road (*NOTE: the State of Colorado now requires a valid hunting/fishing license to access state trust lands)! Additionally, we are about 45-90 minutes away from a variety of alternative adventures! Some of these include Salida, Cripple Creek, Eleven Mile Reservoir, Paradise Cove Swimming Hole, Florissant Fossil Beds, Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, Manitou Incline, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, Seven Falls, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience, several rafting/zipline and Jeep tour companies, Westcliffe, Bishop Castle and Canon City including Skyline Drive, Tunnel Drive, Royal Gorge Train, Museum of Colorado Prisons and The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Any of these can be done as a day trip or visited while on your way here, or home. (*NOTE: some of these attractions are free, some require a fee and some are seasonal. To avoid disappointment, PLEASE do your own research prior to arrival)! Guests need to be self-sustaining to camp here as there are no facilities nearby (gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.)!
