Tongue Creek Ranch

3 sites · Lodging70 acres · Austin, CO
Tongue Creek Ranch is beautifully situated at the base of the Adobe Buttes on the southern side of the Grand Mesa in Austin, Colorado. The 70-acre ranch has over 40 acres in hay and alfalfa with seasonal cattle grazing in the fall and winter months. Whether you come to stay at one of the rental properties, get married or host a special event, we welcome you to enjoy the beautiful setting of Tongue Creek Ranch and the incredible sites of the Western Slope! David and Barb Cocetti purchased the ranch in June 2019 to embark on a new life where they could cultivate the land and be more self-sustaining. By following Biblical guidelines for work and agriculture, this land has come to life! It is proving to be an oasis where people find peace while enjoying the serenity of the surroundings. The clamping Cabin sits behind the horse arena and in front of Tongue Creek. It's the cutest little cabin and we mean little, more like an expertly finished big shed. It is 10x14 with a 3x14 covered porch but finished inside like a 5 star hotel. AC, TV, Wifi, fireplace, comfortable queen size bed. Beetle kill tongue and groove ceiling, cultured barn wood wanes coating. It's super nice. The ranch itself may be the reason for the "glamp" booking. The yard is manicured and the 25 house, goats and chickens are fun to see. The big plus is we are only 20 minutes away from the Grand Mesa outdoorsman mecca. This is probably the cheapest base camp to the Mesa. The ranch is a great base camp to wineries, Moab, Telluride, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, fishing, boating, hiking, trails and hundreds of open BLM land for Razor riding. Check us out.

Remote Mountain Retreats

4 sites · Lodging42 acres · Collbran, CO
At Collbran Vacation Rentals, we believe your stay should be part of your experience. That's why our vacation rentals are unique yet homey, convenient yet mostly off-grid, accessible yet still remote. The Silo is a guest room built in a grain bin beside our house, the Stagecoach Cabin is an old western cabin at the southern corner of our property, and Mossy Oaks Camp is a walk-in outfitter's tent tucked in the oak brush on the backside of our property. None of the properties have "modern conveniences," but they do have kitchen and outdoor bathroom facilities, heat, solar power (electricity at the Silo), and plenty of fresh water in jugs. Our 42 acre property is about 7 miles south of Collbran, Colorado up a steep gravel road at the foot of Grand Mesa. The remote property, covered mostly by buck brush and oak brush, is quiet and has stunning views of the Plateau Valley. You might enjoy hiking the property, petting our animals (dogs, cats, and horses), or viewing the wild animals (elk, deer, and buffalo) at the game ranch below. Our vacation rentals are scattered throughout the property, so you'll have plenty of space during your stay. The Plateau Valley area has many recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The Grand Mesa, which is 15 minutes away on a bumpy gravel road, offers a variety of recreation activities including four-wheeling and snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Powderhorn Ski Resort, 45 minutes away, boasts great skiing or mountain biking, and Vega State Park, also 45 minutes away, features snowmobiling, fishing, waterskiing, and boating. The town of Collbran is a quaint little town with several parks, a rodeo grounds, and one bar/restaurant, gas station, and grocery store. Please note, Collbran shuts down by 8 pm; if you arrive late, be sure to bring necessary supplies and food. We live on the property, but we work full time. If you need help, we can come over, but we won't disturb you during your stay. You can reach us by phone, text, or email at any time. During the summer, you can access all of the properties in a 2-wheel drive car, but the roads can get bumpy or muddy quickly (check out the road video by scanning the QR code in the photos). We recommend driving a vehicle with 4-wheel drive in late fall to early spring as the weather can be unpredictable. If you aren't sure, please ask us about the current conditions of the road.

Cabins near Fruita guide

Overview

Located on the edge of the Colorado Plateau near the Utah-Colorado border, Fruita has made a name for itself as one of America’s top mountain biking destinations. It’s a less crowded alternative to neighboring Moab and offers much in terms of hiking, camping, and sightseeing. Fruita sits at the western entrance of Colorado National Monument and only 90 minutes from Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Arches, and Canyonlands national parks. Campers will find plenty of options around Fruita from amenity-packed RV parks and scenic national park sites to primitive sites with easy access to popular mountain bike trails.

Where to go

North Fruita Desert

The North Fruita Desert is where you’ll find Fruita’s most famous mountain biking trails. The North Fruita Desert area hugs the Book Cliffs just north of town and offers over 250 miles of designated trails including the world-class “18 Road'' trail system. The North Fruita Desert Campground offers convenient access to the trails and dispersed camping is allowed in designated sites just outside the mountain bike trail system.

Colorado National Monument

Sitting on a high plateau, just minutes from Fruita, Colorado National Monument is a striking red rock landscape of sheer cliffs, towering sandstone formations, and dizzying canyons. The park’s top attraction is the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive, which hugs the edge of a cliff and provides access to several trailheads and scenic viewpoints. The Saddlehorn Campground is the only designated campground in the park and sites can be reserved up to six months in advance.

Grand Mesa National Forest

Situated high above the Colorado River’s Grand Valley, about 40 miles east of Grand Junction, Grand Mesa National Forest offers a cooler temperature escape in summer. This unique flat-topped mountain is filled with hundreds of gorgeous alpine lakes and over 200 miles of trails to explore. Campers will find several lakeside campgrounds and tons of opportunities for dispersed and backcountry camping.

When to go

The best seasons for mountain biking and camping in Fruita are spring and fall. Fruita gets a bit too hot in summer to thoroughly enjoy the trails. It’s not uncommon to see triple-digit temperatures in summer. Fall is a particularly nice time to visit Fruita. That’s when peaches, pears, and other delicious fruits are harvested in orchards around Fruita. Winter can also be a pleasant time to visit Fruita as long as you come prepared for chilly nights. Fruita gets very little snow in winter.

Know before you go

  1. Fruita has grocery stores, bike shops, breweries, and restaurants. Nearby Grand Junction offers a wider variety of services.
  2. Multi-day mountain bike rentals are available at several bike shops in Fruita.
  3. Some dispersed camping areas near Fruita require a portable toilet and fire pan for overnight stays.
