Don Ellis has owned and managed the Strawhouse Resorts since 1998.  Don and Julia continue to work hard side-by-side to bring much value to the community.  They have helped the businesses in the area by not only increasing the visitors to Big Flat and surrounding areas, but also by collaborating with many groups to join in making the community of Big Flat a real destination Hot Spot.  Strawhouse Resorts has also provided job opportunities, which has allowed several talented folks the ability to live and thrive in such a beautiful location.  We are a huge supporter of the local artists, so when you come into the cafe', you are greeted by the popular talent of the area!  Our 2,000 sq. ft. patio overlooks the stunning Trinity River, so you have the perfect dining experience.  You might even get to watch a bald eagle or osprey fly by as you enjoy your meal!

We are committed to bringing quality service, organic coffees roasted on-site in micro-batches, excellent food, lodging, and recreational resources to all of our customers and community, while being socially, spiritually, and environmentally responsible.

We built an octagon in the middle of the yurt!  It hides the bed, stores the bathroom, and affords 90 more sq. footage while bringing you closer to the stars at night!  Brilliant, and something to experience!

Humboldt Hideaway



Humboldt hideaway is a small intimate SHARED space with residents. The outdoor kitchen, deck with a view, and campfire ring are all connected to the main resident house. There are places of seclusion, but much of it is shared outdoor space.

Humboldt Hideaway is a small off-the-grid LGBTQ+ queer land project in Northern California. It is set on 12 acres of hilly terrain in the mixed fir and oak woods of Humboldt County, a half-hour east of Arcata. Back in 2001, when it was established, it was undeveloped with nothing on it. It has since been built up with the scrappy efforts of amateur creative dreamers.

 It is a home and resource to extended LGBTQ+ communities by being a small-scale rural resource for learning and sharing useful rural living skills and being a destination for visits, artist and activist retreats, and host to small groups and events.

Anyone is welcome at Humboldt Hideaway, but please understand that it is  an intentional place committed to anti-oppression values. It is important that it remain a safer space for people identifying as queer and/or transgender, as well as a	supportive space for women and people of color to freely be. Please make sure you do not anticipate any concerns/problems with this.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: The property is conveniently located midway between the coast/redwoods and the Trinity River/Trinity Alps backpacking. It is a 45 minute drive to the coast of Trinidad, which has some of the most lovely coves and beaches and Patrick's Point State Park. It is a half hour drive to the coastal Ma-le'l dunes. And it is a half hour drive inland to swimming holes on the Trinity River.  

OFF-THE-GRID: The place is off-the-grid, no internet, only limited solar power, an on-demand propane water heater, and heated by woodstoves. Structures are a combination of natural building, salvaged, and new materials, with a mix of low-tech alternative technologies- all built with lots of love and help from friends.

BOOKING A GROUP: There is potentially both cabin space and camping spots.  The property can accommodate a group of up to 10 people. If you wish to book a group, please get in touch and we'll have you book all of the spaces- including some that are not currently listed, as they are in the shared lodge space. 

WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY: There is a guest room in the shared lodge space if you want to have a wheelchair accessible room. The lodge has a ramp for accessible entrance. This room is not listed, but get in touch if you want to book it.

Bayside Cabin

Come stay in our cozy little cabin tucked in an alder forest.  Only a few minutes drive from downtown Arcata, it’s like being in the middle of the woods, right in town. This is a quiet neighborhood and is bike-friendly for getting around town. Feel free to ask us for recommendations on places to eat, get a drink, or find an adventure in Arcata and surrounding areas.

We are located less than 40 minutes from Redwood National and State Parks where you can find incredible hiking trails!

Sol Spirit Farm

Learn more about this land:Come experience life on a cannabis farm in the Emerald Triangle!  We are a working farm, so there is always something happening in the garden.  Depending on when you visit, we might be planting, pruning, harvesting, cloning, trimming, or some combination of those activities.  We designed this experience to share our love of regenerative farming with others.  The six tents are all located within a central "glampground" surrounded by our cannabis farm and vegetable and livestock areas.  We are in "Bigfoot Country" in the Emerald Triangle of Northern California.  Due to severe fire danger in the summer, we  don't allow personal fires, but instead include organic farm to table meals in the price of your stay, using eggs, meat and produce from our farm or other local farms (vegetarian and vegan options available.)  Let us cook for you and make your vacation that much more relaxing.  You can also schedule a river float or whitewater rafting trip with us for an additional fee.  The area is home to world class river rafting, pristine swimming holes, extraordinary cannabis farms, vineyards, fishing and wildlife sightings.  We can help you plan your days to take in all this beautiful area has to offer.

Asking Walter for a tour of the cannabis farm is a definite must for anyone staying here. You can see all the work and passion he and his crew put into the plants!

With all the extra pillows and blankets, we had a comfortable night's rest sleeping on this king sized bed. 

The whole property is nestled by a forest that gives off the perfect vibe for getting away from civilization for the weekend.

The king sized bed can also be switched to a two twin sized layout.

They even had complementary soap, shampoo, and conditioner!

Animal Land

"Animal Land" Campsite-Retreat is in the Six Rivers National Forest. 

Located on highway 96 along the beautiful wild and scenic, Big Foot scenic byway following the Klamath River. Remote, private and the California Salmon and Trinity rivers are close by.

Welcome to "Animal Land" 27 acres, private, secluded campsite, fantastic river views, lots of space to tent out with private river access for your outdoor camping in experience.

YES, there is a kitchen structure, shade with hot and cold running water, propane 2 burner stove for cooking, table, food composter,

benches, BEAR PROOF BOXES for food, electrical outlet, lights, a grill for BBQ, and a camp fire pit and fire wood provided.

There is also, a clean out door platform toilet facility  close by and a clean serviced porta pot and hand washing station.

YES, bears are here and I have provided

bear proof boxes for food or in your vehicle is safe. You should bring your own pots, pans, plates, utensils for cooking.  I can provide anything for you if you forget or may need.

No cell phone service, food and gas is expensive here so bring your own supplies.

Electric vehicles should be charged full, before you come to Animal Land, sorry no charging here.

For sure bring your binoculars, and or a spotting scope,

There is abundant wildlife to see, Bald eagle, osprey, otter, mink, deer, blue herons, fox, elk and black bears often.  You can also hike or backpack into the Trinity Alps not far drive from here at Animal Land.  At night, no city lights, so the STARGAZING is fabulous!

Larger groups can book upon request should you want to book for more than 10 campers.

Please note: RVs, campers, trailers, 24-25ft is the largest my camp can handle. 

LOOK out for bears, skunks, scorpions and beware of snakes, ticks. Please CONSERVE 

the WATER

and the electricity. Keep a small fire and take care of your trash, I will recycle bottles, aluminum, cans for you.

Just be CAREFUL all the time and ENJOY the Klamath River.
