Redwoods Bend Retreat

The Redwoods Bend Retreat is a place to get away from it all. Located on the Yurok reservation right on the Klamath River just outside Orick, CA, we are "off the grid", through a Redwood forest and over a mountain down into the Klamath River valley. We have a 5 acre meadow, and orchard with 50 trees, peaches pears, apples, cherries, plums, pluots, apricots and grapes. We are right on the Klamath river. It's a great place to come and recharge your internal batteries. There is no cellphone service and none of our sites have internet service. Our Main House was built in 1952 and retains the flavor of the 50’s. It houses a kitchen, dining hall, a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Our log-built Lodge overlooks the Klamath River with 3 bedrooms, a full kitchen, bathroom and wrap-around covered porch. Our Pumpkin and Blue Cottages each sleep 4-5 people. They are close to the double Yellow Shower house and toilets, and they have hot and cold running water, a propane cooktop, and a wood stove for heat. We do NOT have refrigeration, and our solar batteries or generator provides us lights at night. Campers who use our Cottages may use their own sleeping bags, but we have beds with mattresses and pillows and clean bedding. We also have an Upper Barn bedroom and half-bath rental. Our two-story Riverview Yurt appeals to folks who want a full kitchen, a private shower and flush toilet overlooking the Klamath river from our 50 x 50 foot upper deck. Luscious to sit outside and watch the river flow by during the day, and to let the water lull you to sleep at night. For families (up to 8), folks who like to fish, or old friends who just want a very special get-away. Each of our six campsites have a picnic table and a fire pit. Our Maple River, Grotto River and Pepperwood River sites overlook the gorgeous Klamath River. Our Morning Meadow, Orchard Meadow, and Deer Meadow sites are close to our 5 acre meadow where blacktail deer graze in the evenings. We have a Yellow double Shower House with two separate sides, each with a toilet, sink and shower and on demand hot water, so folks don't have to wait. There's also a new Camp Shower at the corner of the orchard for our campers, along with two outhouses for camper use, one at the bottom of the road down to the meadow, and another in the woods just past Deer Meadow Camp. We see lots of wildlife; silver foxes, a bald eagle and a family of river otters downstream, vultures, blue heron, occasionally an osprey will fly overhead clutching a freshly caught salmon and call to each other to brag about it! There are rare sightings of timid black bears who run from humans, but sometimes can be seen grazing in the meadow with the black-tail deer. We're surrounded by old logging trails made by the lumber companies 80 years ago when they clear cut the old growth redwood on our side of the mountain, and now it's completely reforested with 200 ft tall Doug Fir, Madrone, Cedar, Oak, other pine species and Pepper wood trees, and we have written permission from the Green Diamond company to allow guest to hike on their adjacent properties.

This was originally a Girl Scout camp called Singing Pines back in the 30’s. You’ll see as you roam around some of the original buildings and structures. It hasn’t been in operation as a Girl Scout camp for over 20 years. The neighbor camp bought the lease but haven’t had the funds to revive it yet. DIRECTIONS: Take Exit for Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2) from the 210 Go North, up the mountain for 29 miles Turn left on Sulpher Springs Rd Go about a mile and you will see a Singing Pines sign up on a hill on the right sided. There is a white gate which is usually open but if it's closed go ahead and open it. Go down that driveway about a mile and turn left at the fork. Follow that road down and around the lake staying to the right. Once you passed the lake there will be a little uphill and the location is on the left. Learn more about this land: The Skoolie is a converted short bus with two love seats that convert to an RV queen bed, sink, stove top, dinette, and over head lights. Outside is a private meadow with a short walk to a small lake. You can take out the provided sit on top kayak or bring your fishing gear. Outside the Skoolie is a picnic table, fire pit (firewood included) and a hammock. Up the hill, a very short walk is the private campground toilet facility. This is not shared with anyone else. No cell phone reception no linens bring a sleeping bag or warm blankets. You can charge your phone in the Skoolie for a sunrise alarm or just to take pictures.

Learn more about this land:A vast expanse of oak trees, California Junipers and rugged, mountainous land running with jackrabbits, quail, and owls that is just 3 miles from Vazquez Rocks and the PCT, our ranch transports you. From the tent campsite, you look out for 20 miles and see nothing but nature across small mountains and canyons all the way to the peaks of Angeles National Forest in the distance. The campsite is a large flat area. For a trailer or RV it's a great place to park and the view is towards wide open spaces. With a tent or if you want more pure nature, you can drive out onto the property further towards the small ruin of the old homesteader's cabin or beyond. The property has a long-abandoned gold mine and circular arrastres where miners used mules to break up rocks. Nearby Acton has pick-your-own apples/pears/peaches at Bloom farms. We are at 3000 feet with strong sun during the day and cool mountains air at night. The camping is set away from structures, but if you want to stroll, closer to the ranch buildings, we have friendly small goats you can visit if interested and horses and a donkey to say hello to across the corral fence.

While we work very hard to keep our places pristine and spotless - if anyone in your group will faint if they see a bug or lizard or little frog inside - then this probably isn't the place for you. Please be very careful booking cottages for someone else - like your parents just arriving from another continent - they might prefer something more conventional. Some folks describe our places as a luxurious form of camping. We make our cottages very comfortable - they have all the basics - electricity - wifi - most have kitchens, bath or shower and comfy clean beds. But they are not like a hotel with perfect walls and a sterile atmosphere. Please look at all the pictures and read all the reviews. We can't offer refunds just because we don't meet the standards of a normal hotel. Welcome! Our 'Tentsite Over Topanga' is a lovely private campsite high above the magical Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon. You will be treated to a sweeping view of the verdant Topanga landscape. Our host, (Peter Alsop) will meet you in the parking lot of the world-renowned Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum, show you where the bathrooms are, and together hike up 300 steps to the camp site. (Campers must be fit enough to make this climb!) Under the support posts of our former tipi, there is a 20 foot circle where 2 or 3 tents can be set up. We have a picnic table there for your convenience. Of course no fires of any kind are permitted, (including 'no smoking' please!). You may want to bring pre-made or delicatessen food and drinks, and come prepared for very warm days and cool nights. It's a very short path from the Tentsite up to the trail's end at the 'big rock overlook', and that's where the trail ends! There are many other wonderful hiking trails throughout Topanga in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains State Parks, ... and the Pacific Ocean beaches are only a :10 minute drive to the South. Many campers come specifically to see one of the fantastic shows at the Theatricum Botanicum, and then head back up the hill behind our outdoor theater and spend the night with family, friends or a special loved one sleeping under the stars over Topanga. This 2024 season we are presenting 5 plays: "Wendy's Peter Pan", Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "A Winter's Tale", Moliere's "Tartuffe" and a new play by Paola Aguilar, "The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote". You can look up "Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum" on you browser and they will have ticket information and dates. We also have a small bakery on the grounds, where one can find excellent baked goods and coffee for sale on most Sunday mornings. Families with young children love seeing the lizards, butterflies, woodpeckers and other small wildlife they spotted around the site. Because a theater operates on the premises , no pets are allowed, and as for your trash, ... we ask that if you 'pack it in, ... please pack it out too!' We seem to have good telephone reception for almost all carriers, but we do not have wireless access. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: There really is only one small public transportation vehicle available. It's called "the Beach Bus" and it goes from San Fernando Valley, through Topanga to the beach and back again several times a day. Not really sure of their schedule, but you search for it and find out if you are interested. Most people have their own vehicles. MEETING UP? Peter will contact you and make plans to meet with you at the Theatricum and walk you up to the Tipi in the afternoon, (before showtime if you have reserved your tickets. You can come back down and visit to one of Topanga's many local restaurants for lunch or dinner, or just stay at the Tipi and chill. HIKING Our 'Tentsite Over Topanga' has been a pristine area for a very long time. If you'ld like to hike in Topanga, the Topanga State Park is only a couple of miles away. Leave the theater going south, headed toward the ocean. After about a mile and a half, you will see Entrada Road on your left, which will take you along the edge of the park. There is the Dead Horse Parking lot almost as soon as you turn onto Entrada, and a main entrance at the top of Entrada. Dogs are not allowed in the park. And you must be careful about wild life.

I was introduced to the delights of Glamping at El Capitan in Santa Barbara which was amazing and I wanted to stay there forever!! -- BUT with a busy city life of raising kids and building my own small food business -- I wanted to jump from Glamp-life to City-life (and back again) with more ease and share it with others. In my opinion, the beauty of So-Cal living is that you can literally spend the morning surfing in Malibu and that same evening find yourself skiing in Big Bear! (After 25 years of living here -- that reality still amazes me) To mirror this unique juxtaposition - at La Boheme, you will find a tranquil Safari Tent Glamping experience - with hiking/biking trails and all sorts of outdoor activities anywhere from a 5 minute walk to 30 minutes away by car---- but you can also hop on the Gold Line train (which is a 1 minute walk out the back door) and in choosing one direction, you are a couple of stops from Chinatown or Downtown LA's rich cultural experiences & exciting nightlife.  If you decide to explore in the other direction, Metro's Gold Line (in 1 stop) will take you to the heart of Highland Park's bustling scene - offering a smorgasbord of eateries, coffee-shops, speakeasies, boutiques, yoga studios and art galleries - including LA's oldest bowling alley: Highland Park Bowl. Take the train further and you're in the heart of glorious Pasadena (home to The Rose Bowl and exceptional Norton Simon Museum)-- or continue out to beautiful Sierra Madre -- where there is hiking and exploring galore! At La Boheme you can grill onsite, order take-out, dine out, stay-in and book a personal masseuse (that will change your world!) The property is located near Rancho Santa Margarita, Holy Jim Canyon, O’Neill Park, and Rose Canyon. The campsite is in an oak grove over one acre in size. This is a beautiful, peaceful site for your motor home, RV or tent. You will have hiking access to over 100 acres on our property. Trabuco Creek which runs through the property is usually flowing during the winter months. The campsite can accommodate up to 50 people. I have hosted family parties with 500+ people.

Glamping Hollywood Hills design aesthetic draws inspiration from my own personal travels through Mexico with a Hollywood vintage art deco flare! Being well traveled myself, this space was built with the upmost care for guest comfort in mind! Plush bedding (2 full size real mattresses that can comfortably sleep up to 4 people) and towels, full private & luxurious bathroom, fridge, microwave, dishware, heating and cooling, shag carpet, Wi-Fi, electricity to charge your devices, & ample food delivery is available in the area. A truly magical & memorable experience right in the heart of Hollywood! To get to the Glamp, please bear in mind there are quite a lot of stairs to get up the hill so please pack light, but once you arrive, the view is completely worth it! Your own private oasis tucked on top of a private residence with keyed lock gates, so it is completely safe & secure for your belongings if you choose to go out on the town during your stay!Glamping Hollywood Hills is located in a quiet neighborhood in the hills so while the goal is for guests to enjoy themselves and have the best experience possible, I do ask that you please be respectful of the neighbors and keep the noise down. If you're looking for a more turned up experience, there are loads of bars and clubs just a short walk away on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Also, because this is located in the Hills, it is a HIGH FIRE ZONE so no grilling (since we are so centrally located, there are numerous food delivery services that deliver all hours of the day though!) or fires are allowed. And for smokers, please dispose of butts in the designated ash trays. PARKING: There is limited free street parking, or you can park for free at the Hollywood Heritage Museum, just a 2 minute walk from the house if there are no events at the Hollywood Bowl. And if you can’t find a free street spot, I can get you a parking permit for $4 per day. Please let me know if you require that and I can get the passes for you! I take a lot of pride in my space and keeping it clean, and absolutely love hosting guests, so I just ask that you have the same respect back for my space and leave it like it was when you arrived. Please remove your shoes inside the tent in efforts of keeping the rugs clean. :)

Kitchen has a big pink fridge, green gas range, chartruse coffee-maker, electric tea kettle, toaster, blender, pots, pans, and other basic cooking implements. Bath has shower and private toilet-room. Countless Joshua Trees on the property, a quarter mile walking path along the whole property, and an early stage cactus farm, live on site. You have to see it to believe it - from the wide open sunset views to the west to dark clear skies where you can soak in the stars. NOTE: This is OFF THE GRID. No plumbing, no electric. We have an outhouse with a composting toilet and THAT'S IT. A tiny house with a full bed is on site, but no electric, no heat, no AC.

But as predictable as those top-notch features are, this city is nothing like nearby Los Angeles in that it flies under the radar as a top-tier camping destination. Long Beach RV parks abound, as do tent camping sites. The Pacific Ocean offers plenty of water-based recreational activities like diving and surfing, while nearby trails to the north and south provide hikers with unparalleled natural beauty. Toss in options to visit one of the area’s botanical gardens or bike paths and you’ll have more than enough ways to enjoy this coveted stretch of California Coast.

Where to go

Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach

Looking for beach RV camping near Long Beach? Head 30y minutes south to Bolsa Chica Beach, a state beach in Orange County with a campground, fire rings, picnic tables, and full hookups. While tent beach camping isn’t allowed, it’s a great place to hang for the day (and maybe take a shower) while enjoying the cresting waves this area is known for. The three-mile shore is much less crowded than Long Beach, and with a nature reserve attached, you can see rare wildlife, too. Lastly, we love that this beach is handicapped accessible and is pet-friendly.

San Bernardino National Forest, San Bernardino

About 90 minutes from Long Beach, San Bernardino National Forest is an adventurer’s haven. You’ll find some dedicated tent sites here, as well as group camping options and cabins. Like many other national forests across the United States, you can usually find dispersed camping here, too. Many campers enjoy visiting Big Bear Lake, a stunning body of water that boasts recreation throughout the year, while Castle Rock Trail and Pine Knot trails are popular hiking routes around the water. Heart Rock trail features a unique waterfall.

San Onofre State Beach, San Diego County

To enjoy the rugged, natural beauty of the Long Beach area, check out San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County about an hour’s drive south. This state park is one of the top-visited parks in California, with options to surf, kayak, sunbathe, fish, or watch whales and dolphins. There are a few main areas: the bluffs, the surf beach by the sea, and San Mateo Campground, which boasts water hookups, RV sites, a dump station, and its very own waterfront with some of the best surf on the Pacific Coast.

When to go

Long Beach is gorgeous for camping throughout the year, with nighttime temperatures never dipping below 50°F in the winter months. That said, California’s state parks are much busier during the summer, so you might have better luck avoiding crowds if visiting outside of the peak months of June, July, and August. The best chances for seeing gray and humpback whales is January through April.
