A short drive south of Los Angeles in Orange County, Huntington Beach has long been a favorite among surfers—owing largely to its year-round swells—earning it the nickname “Surf City.” While the 9.5-mile-long beach here is the city's biggest draw, there are also plenty of things to do inland, from visiting the International Surfing Museum to shopping for beachwear and souvenirs in local shops. While you can't camp at the beach here, you'll find plenty of campgrounds in Crystal Cove State Park, less than a half-hour drive south of town.

Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Please be mindful of the property markers, and respect our neighboring property lines. You are responsible for your own fitness in hiking the inclining trails and staircases. Hiking or walking sticks are highly recommended. A shared cooking area, has been cleared, a small fire extinguisher provided, burn kit, and carved crater seating. Nearby, a shared pit toilet pallet stall with a small 5 gallon solar shower bag, shower and pouring bottle-for minor freshening, vanity mirror and 5 gallon water jug, refilled as needed. Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Had a great stay at this campsite! The surroundings were beautiful, the site was well maintained, and it was peaceful and relaxing. Everything was clean and easy to access, and the atmosphere made it a perfect place to unwind. I’d definitely come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a nice outdoor getaway.

Second visit to this year at this campground and I have to say it’s absolutely one of the best private campgrounds in the San Diego area. Stunning views from nearly every location. With hot showers and clean restrooms (flushable toilets !!), a on site store with most camping needs, what more could a camper need. It honestly feels like stepping into a movie, from the fee range goats (and llama) that share the space, to the sunrises above the clouds that appear endless I cannot recommend this place enough. And not to mention the extremely accesible prices for tent/rv camping. Overall 11/10 so awesome will be returning frequently!!!

We enjoyed our evening staying at the Rock Bottom campsite at split splitrock. The baby goats were so cute and it was nice to be able to spend some time with all of the animals. Great views from the observation deck and a clear sky full of stars

Split Rock is a magical place. My kids and I had a wonderful time, between climbing on rocks, watching the goats, and taking in the views. Highly recommend this place!

The view was stunning, the bus was comfy and was an added part of the experience for sure. Every morning I was woken up by the running of the goats lol. They would stop sometimes and hang out as well. Had a lovely solo camping trip here and would definitely return again!

Where to go

Coastal Southern California

While you're in the area, spend a little time exploring other stretches of the oftentimes sunny Southern California coastline. While you can't camp at Huntington Beach, there are plenty of beaches where you can within a short drive away, including San Elijo State Beach and South Carlsbad State Beach, both of which take just over an hour to reach by car.

California's Central Coast

North of Los Angeles County is the beginning of California's Central Coast region, a quieter (and not always as warm) alternative to busy Southern California. Here you’ll find a mix of quiet coves and sandy beaches, plus miles of forest-flanked coastline. Beachfront camping is available at El Capitán State Beach, just outside of Santa Barbara.

The Mojave Desert

Head inland and you'll eventually find yourself in the Mojave Desert. This dry expanse is home to some of Southern California’s prettiest natural features along with two national parks: Death Valley and Joshua Tree.

When to go

Huntington Beach is great throughout the year. The warmest time to visit is, naturally, in the summer months, but this time of year also gets lots of crowds, and area campgrounds and hotels fill up fast. September is a good time to visit if you want swimming-weather without the masses. While you can surf year-round, you'll find the best waves in the wintertime, when powerful western and northwestern swells are the norm.
