Snow Canyon Campground

So you’re headed to the rainbow wonderland that is Utah, but all the national park campsites have been booked for months (or years).

Fret not! Snow Canyon Campground has sites aplenty, and offers an excellent place to rest before jetting off to Zion or Bryce Canyon. And you may just want to stick around a little longer once you get a taste of its red-and-white Navajo sandstone canyon in the Red Mountains, full of lava tubes, caves, cinder cones, and petrified sand dunes. The campsites fit anywhere from 8 to 50 people, so you can bring enough friends to film a re-enactment of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, one of the many westerns filmed at this Mojave Desert gem. Easy to moderate trails offer great photography options, and once you catch a sunset here, you might never leave.

Is this listing just for the state park? It's funny, because that one is always booked, just like the national parks the listing mentions.

Be prepared for ants at some sites. We had to move since the first site was eating us alive. New site worked out well. Hot during the summer months.

This is a real gem of a state park. It's got some of the same beauty you'll see at nearby Zion National Park but a tenth of the people at most. There are lots of hikes, long and short, that you can string together. Some of the trails are well-marked, some aren't, but it's not that big of a park. There's a tent-only section of the campground where you're nestled right by the red rocks. Clean bathrooms. Tent sites have a fire ring, BBQ and picnic table. Watch your food; the squirrels are sneaky!

It gets pretty quiet here, except the through-road in the Park is open 24/7, so you get the occasional motorcycle or diesel pick-up driving through the canyon after dark. Great hikes all over the place, and plenty of quail and bunny rabbits to observe in the evenings. Surprising to be so close-in to St. George. Some light pollution from the town, however, but a great place to stay!
