Sawbill Lake Campground

Campers in need of an excellent base camp for access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness should definitely put Sawbill Lake on their shortlists.

You might not want to leave camp, though! The thick pine forest gives every campsite fantastic privacy, and you might just feel like you and your crew are all alone in the woods (there’s hardly a better feeling, as far as we’re concerned). The campground is perched on top of a hill overlooking the lake, and some of the heavily wooded sites will even give you a teasing glimpse of the immaculate water.

A great first time Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) trip would be to stay at Sawbill and take a day trip on the Kelso Loop (you can even rent gear from an outfitter right there). One of my favorite places on earth.
