The Land of Make+Believe is a retreat space bringing magical realism to our nonfiction world... Located at the base of the Sierra Foothills in Murphys, California, we are fourteen acres perched on the edge of time. Our landscape straddles geologic formations that span millions of years across the Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras. The marbleized limestone outcropping is a prominent site feature that's culturally, geologically, and historically significant. It was used as a communal grinding rock — Chaw'se — by the Miwok to process acorns into meal for food. This same rock formation was later hydraulically mined for gold in the second half of the 19th century, amidst some of the largest mining operations during the California Gold Rush. Downtown Murphys, our local gold-mining town turned quaint wine country destination, is just 1.5 miles away. Our site manifests as a spiritual epicenter within the larger landscape, a gateway to the Sierras, a space of regeneration. Fourteen acres of pure possibility for gathering, for staying, for inspiration, for joy.

1979 Nomad Camper With Meadow View
Wonderful time, we'll be back!
We arrived at the Land Of Make+Believe gates that opened to spacious views of rolling lands. We had attended many a venue at Murphy's and driven past this land never knowing this treasure was there. Tucked off the highway far enough to not hear traffic and close enough to be in Murphy's in just a few minutes. When we arrived we were delighted at the updated vintage camper with all the amenities needed to freshen up and head into town for dinner. The camper was decorated with a vintage boho style that made it homey and stylish. After dinner, we returned to the camper site and spent some time gazing at the star-filled sky before retiring to the most spacious and comfortable RV mattress I'd ever slept on. The light blocking shades were a sweet touch and allowed us to linger inside a bit the next morning. We then enjoyed savoring a cup of coffee outside, appreciating the morning sun that filtered through the canopy of the huge oak tree. Anita was a wonderful host. She made sure we were comfortable and felt well cared for down to every detail. We look forward to our next stay.

A Magical Weekend ✨
My husband and I loved staying at Anita’s camper! It’s located at the end of a long driveway, near the house but far enough away to be private. From the outside, fairy lights made the entrance identifiable and cozy. Inside, the camper was comfortable and filled with thoughtful details, like a firm king size bed and blackout curtains. It also came standard with a stove, shower, and composting toilet, all of which worked without any problems while we were there. The property is minutes away from downtown Murphy’s, which is filled with restaurants, tasting rooms, and locally owned shops. If you like wine tasting, there’s plenty of great wineries (Lavender Ridge was our favorite), and we got coffee every morning at Gold Country Roasters. And definitely make time for the natural bridges trail— you can literally swim through a cave! We loved exploring the area, but our favorite part of the trip was settling down in the camper at night. It was so easy to see the stars and simply admire the natural beauty of the property. One of the highlights of the trip was our tour of Anita’s house, ie the Gathering Space. It’s an additional fee, but worth it. The house is an architectural marvel, and Anita’s a designer/collector, so the home is full to bursting with art and one of a kind pieces. It was also really interesting to learn about the history of the property and Anita’s vision for the future. This camper is a one-of-a-kind find in a lovely town, and we’ll definitely be back!
