The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. Learn more about this land: Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy). Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal. There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp. This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road, and easy drive through exit. Multiple spots to choose from for your RV, either with more sun or less. Please be aware that this is a rural neighborhood on the edge of the forest. As such, all the wonderful (and not so wonderful) insects of nature can be found, particularly in summer months. Also, because it is a neighborhood, there are times when neighborly activities can happen within earshot including, but not limited to: yard work, tree cutting, construction work, atv or motorcycle riding, get-togethers, hunting or target shooting, laughing and playing.

Horse Camping Fun!
"6" stars out of 5! Dan was a fantastic host! I highly recommend staying here. We were the first HORSE campers, so we all learned a lot. The corrals were spacious, water was provided, and Dan wanted us to leave the poop for his garden. There were lots of trails to explore, and we were fortunate enough to be invited on a 4-hour guided ride to a waterfall led by Dan's neighbor, Bill. There were more trails that we didn't have time to explore, so we will have to come back. The camp is a pull-through site, which is great for smaller rigs. I have a 3-horse LQ, and it was quite a challenge to get it through the gate (it didn't help that we arrived after dark). However, Dan was VERY helpful. If you are skilled with backing a trailer, you should be able to get a bigger rig into the driveway via pulling into the neighbor's road and backing into the site near the horse corrals instead of trying to turn into the beautiful wood fence that Dan has built. The camp site is super cute. Dan is knowledgeable about the area and trails and provided us with firewood for a campfire. All of the neighbors are friendly, and the overall experience was fantastic. If you love stargazing, or interesting geological sites, this is the place to go!

It was a wonderful experience staying at Daniel’s camp. We forgot our air mattress and he brought us his and a light. He was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and told us about the beautiful trails near by. It was breathtaking taking the trail nearby to a peak overlooking the terrain while sitting on his handcrafted bench. Will definitely return!

Great getaway. We will return!
To begin, Daniel is an amazing host. He was extremely accommodating, gave us firewood, and was willing to walk us around to show us trailheads, and tell us everything he knew about the land. We had an amazing time, learning his story along with his amazing companion, Knox, The plot of land that we stayed on is carefully thought out with pull-through, campfire, and hammock capabilities. He already has two hammocks set up and a picnic table with an umbrella. The camping area is quaint, but provides plenty of cover to give you privacy and feel secluded. You can tell he has given effort to set it up. My favorite part was the handcrafted trail that he provided with a bench he built at the top of a small mountain deemed the sunset bench. Please, if you get an opportunity to hike up this mountain, it is a short and slightly difficult hike to give you an amazing view around the surrounding area. Daniel was a perfect host providing a much-needed getaway. We can easily see ourselves, returning to see some of the geological formations that we never got a chance to see because we simply ran out of time.

Great spot to escape from the city and relax under the stars. Dan setup some hammocks, a fire pit, and a nice table. This is easily nicer than your average campsite. Dan was very understanding with my scheduling mistake and accommodated us after the app closed the reservation. He had great info on the local trails and places to check out. Worth the trip!

Dan was a great host! Very informative made us feel welcome right from the start, told us all the cool spots to check out, went up here and found this little gem with my girlfriend and our 2 dogs, couldn’t ask for a better weekend vacation, there’s so much to do and it was so much fun here, very beautiful and lots of animals and great sites to see, thanks to Dan for making it happen and being the coolest host you can get, no one does it better! Would give this place 10 stars if I could we will definitely be back! Thanks again Dan!
