Pick between the woods and the walled garden at this stunning Scottish Borders site

There’s a sliding scale of wildness among the pitches of Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping. Stay near reception and you’ll have a neat pitch in the site’s Edwardian walled garden. Head further out in the 500-acre estate and you might just find yourself alone in the woods. Whichever you prefer, you’ll be off grid and able to have a campfir—but all with handy facilities in a central hub. For lots of campers it’s the perfect balance: a taste of the freedom of wild camping in the Scottish Borders with a bit of a safety net.

Toilets are provided, pitches are signposted and, if you’ve not managed to forage your dinner, you can always head to the campsite shop. In fact, if the very idea of pitching a tent is too much, you can still join in here by booking one of the site’s four safari tents. Although they are palatial, furnished affairs, they still offer a wildish stay in individual, secluded settings. The closest is five minutes’ walk from campsite reception, the furthest a 25-minute stomp away. Most of the camping pitches are in the enchanting walled garden close to The Hub, a handy undercover space with a stone fireplace, seating, and a campers’ kitchen. There are also flushing loos and hot showers in a block with underfloor heating. Choose a further flung woodland pitch and you trade these luxuries for space, trees, and wildlife.

As this is a tents-only, car-free site, vehicles are left near reception and you have to walk to your pitch (though a kit drop-off service is on offer). For most of the people who will like it here, the walk won’t be a problem. This is an outdoorsy area and many who pass through are walking the Borders Abbey Way. It provides a link to the medieval abbey in the town of Jedburgh, some six miles away. Other tempting routes are hikes up Rubers Law Hill or to see nearby Fatlips Castle. But if all that walking is a bit too wild for you, you can always jump in the car and tour the other attractions of the Borders: whisky distilleries, stately homes and other magnificent abbeys.

Pitch 22

Site 2 - Castle View Small Pitch- Adult Only
Peaceful here never disappoints
This pitch (Castle View No 2) is on a slight slope but not too much, the ground is quite uneven so a thicker sleep mat is good here. We were lucky with the weather and this pitch has the advantage of having the sun for most of the day. We brought our own fire pit as there isn’t always a grill on the fire pits that are supplied and they are very deep. We have camped many times in the wild camping area at Rubislaw it is peaceful and never disappoints.

Pitch 12
Excellent site, loved the car-free pitches, great kitchen/washing up area with plenty fridge-freezer space, cooker, oven and microwave. Beautiful countryside and fab “wild camping” area for those who want to try it out with “backup”. Must visit again!

Pitch 11
A Teepee in Plot 11!
We chose our plot carefully from the accurate site plan and were not disappointed. Strawberries and raspberries available for an honesty donation; kettles and fridges were a good thing too. Another time, we'll book a Llama Walk nearby!

Pitch 28
First class campsite!
I can’t recommend this campsite enough with it’s beautiful location and amazing facilities! We stayed in the walled garden (pitch 28) which was a little more secluded but still only a few minutes from the toilets etc. We hired a fire pit a large bag of logs can be purchased for £8 included fire lighters. The toilets and showers were immaculate; and a kitchen are with fridges, sinks, toasters, kettles, cooker and microwave. The seating area in the hub is undercover for when the weather isn’t so kind although we were lucky to have the sunshine. One of the fridges wasn't working when we arrived and a text message with an immediate response sorted it straight away. There are plenty of plug sockets and a thoughtful area for phone charging. The surrounding area is beautiful - the site feels remote and off the beaten track but close enough to Hawick and Jedburgh for the larger food shops if needed although there’s on onsite shop for essentials .. like ice creams and chocolate! We walked up nearby Ruberslaw hill which takes you through the woods and when you reach the top you have 360 stunning views. I must mention the staff who were so helpful and friendly, thank you. We will return and try the pitch in the woods next time!

Our unique, walled garden camping pitches or our secluded woodland pitches offer the perfect getaway for those looking to relax and unwind under canvas in the peace of our Borders hills. Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping is a family run campsite based in our Edwardian walled garden, complete with traditional glasshouse. Pitch your own tent on one of our landscaped pitches and enjoy the gardens or immerse yourself fully into the wild camping experience in one of our three wild woodland camping areas. Woodland pitches come with a firebowl and one bag of logs per night as standard and you can even have your gear transported to the woodland for an additional fee. There are full washroom and shower facilities (with under-floor heating). The communal kitchen has stove, microwave, kettle, freezers and large sinks. For muddy people there is a washing machine and drying green, and boot washes . The large undercover gathering area has tables centred on a large stone fireplace. Or you can have your own barbeque with one of our fire bowls and bag of logs. In the remoter part of the woods we have 4 exclusive, fully equipped Safari Tents for glampers (just bring your food and toothbrush) and some exclusive pitch-your-own sites. These sites are sensitive and offer a good chance of seeing wildlife if you are quiet and observant, as they are hundreds of metres apart. Numbers per pitch are limited. We also have 1 exclusive woodland site for single tent bookings for the ultimate in peace and quiet camping. We look forward to seeing you!
Nearby attractions

Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping is set within a 500-acre estate so you can enjoy a walk without leaving site – but there are plenty more outside its boundaries too. The one you really ought to undertake is the hike up nearby Rubers Law Hill. Its peak is over 400 metres and offers great views all the way to the border with England. Fatlips Castle (more of a tower, in truth) sits atop another nearby hill, visible from some parts of site and that makes for a worthy walk. The Borders Abbey Way also passes through the estate and offers alternative walking routes. In its entirety it’s a 68-mile circular route connecting abbeys in the Borders – the closest of which is just six miles away in Jedburgh. The town of Jedburgh is home to other attractions too including Jedburgh Castle and Jail Museum and the Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre. In the other direction is Hawick (seven miles), home to the Borders Distillery where you can enjoy a tour and tasting. Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre (seven miles) has a good kids’ play area and Abbotsford, the turreted home of Sir Walter Scott, is another popular tourist attraction that’s not too far from here (18 miles).

Food and drink

There’s a shop in reception which is well stocked with all the essentials – including local sausages, burgers and bacon and eggs. For more than that, head two miles into Denholm village. There’s an excellent village shop and a butchers for supplies to cook on site. It’s also home to the closest options for eating out. There’s The Cream Puff Cafe for coffee and cake or light lunches, The Denholm Meet for Italian food at breakfast, lunch or dinner and a choice of two pubs. The Fox and Hounds and The Auld Cross Keys, which has a beer garden, real fire and a menu that offers restaurant-style meals as well as pub classics.
