Can you wild camp in the Lake District?

Wild camping in the Lake District is not officially permitted, as most of the land is privately owned or managed by the National Trust or the Lake District National Park Authority. However, wild camping is tolerated in some higher, more remote areas of the park, as long as campers follow the "Leave No Trace" principles and respect the environment.

It is always best to seek permission from the landowner before setting up camp. Alternatively, there are many designated campsites throughout the Lake District, including some around Ullswater, where you can camp legally and with proper facilities. To find a suitable campsite, visit the Lake District National Park website.
