17. Sportsmans Resort

62km from Morris State Park · 18 units
Nestled along the historic New Madrid fault line, our campground offers a unique experience steeped in natural beauty and rich history. The area is renowned for the remarkable geological events of the winter of 1811-1812, when a series of powerful earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to flow backward for up to 24 hours. This seismic activity led to the creation of Reelfoot Lake, a stunning natural feature where visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, and birdwatching, with the echoes of history resonating in the landscape. The name "Reelfoot" is derived from a legend about a 19th-century Chickasaw Indian chief who bore the name due to a deformed foot. His tale of defiance against the Great Spirit, which involved stealing a bride from a neighboring tribe, is said to have triggered the earthquakes that formed the lake, adding a layer of intrigue to your visit. Our family-owned and operated resort, purchased by Bill and Candy Curlin in 1986, is situated at the northern end of Reelfoot Lake, in the Upper Blue Basin. In 2000, we expanded our offerings by acquiring Ray's Camp near Keystone Park, which we renamed Sportsman's South, located in the Lower Blue Basin. Our campground provides a perfect blend

Overview

About

Morris State Park may be Missouri’s smallest—and one of its newest—but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit. This 161-acre day-use park is home to a geological feature known as Cowley’s Ridge, a unique ridge of long, low hills rising 200-feet above the Missouri Bootheel lowlands created by the Mississippi River floodplains. Hike the Beech Tree Trail to explore the unique plants and soils found here. To maintain the park’s natural landscape, minimal amenities are available.

Notable campgrounds

Morris State Park does not offer camping onsite, but here are some nearby public campgrounds.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Missouri State Parks offer reservations online and by phone up to 12-months in advance.
  • Lake Wappapello State Park is a popular summer destination, especially on weekends and holidays, so advanced reservations are recommended.
  • Mark Twain National Forest does not require reservations for dispersed camping, but campers must follow land regulations.
  • Tennessee State Parks also offer reservations up to 12-months in advance online and on phone.

When to go

Southern Missouri is hot and humid in summer. Hiking may be steamy. Spring and fall are more moderate, with fall being particularly scenic due to the autumn color changes. Winter is less preferred for camping, as the temperatures may dip below freezing.

  • Morris State Park’s Beech Tree Trail is 2.6 miles long, with one portion crossing private property.
  • Mosquitoes are plentiful throughout much of the year.
  • Dogs are welcome on the trail, but they must be leashed.
