I have a menagerie of animals, many rescued or adopted, that love all the attention. The photography during Fall is amazing!Big Lake is 2000 acre and has numerous large islands and secluded bays - the shoreline has been virtually undeveloped.
It is one of the top walleye fishing lakes in the state. Besides that Big Lake is filled with Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, and Jumbo Perch. If you are planning on visiting another lake while staying with us, we have good news for you.
We are near Hegman Lake where centuries-old pictographs can be viewed and photographed. Check it out yourself and make new fantastic memories.
Our Resort
Privacy and comfort complement the natural beauty of the cabins. Whether you choose to be tucked away in the trees or nearer the natural sand swimming beach and playground, with the exception of towels, everything is included -- modern kitchen appliances, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and more. Each cabin is unique in amenities. Some feature decks in private wooded areas, screen porches, private docks, log construction, or fireplaces. Moose, deer and other wild animals inhabit the trails and forests where earlier innkeepers corralled a stable of horses for their guests' riding pleasure. Unique to Big Lake, and its relationship to the wilderness, motorized boats and canoes are both allowed and available for our guests to use.

We loved our stay here! The folks at the office were so helpful and friendly, the site was clean and well maintained, and being able to take out a kayak or canoe onto the lake at any time was a wonderful feature. We stayed at a tent site, which was very conveniently located by the bathroom/showers. Cabin o’ Pines was a wonderful place to stay while exploring northern Minnesota and Voyageurs national park. We were even able to watch the northern lights from the lake! I would absolutely stay here again in the future.

I found a perfect week of camping, solitude and fun resort options at Cabin O' Pines resort. I stayed in campsite #2, which had ample space for an evening campfire and a great view of the lake. The resort itself was very nice, clean, and the owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. Having a small store on site with a few groceries so I didn't even need to go to town was great!
Kayaking from the sandy beach area on a lovely, sunny afternoon was perfect. Sunsets from the docks were beautiful! Very pet friendly.

This campsite was a great find! Right next to the swimming beach and close to the docks. Our site had its own campfire and picnic table with a beautiful lake view. The free amenities were awesome including water toys, yard games, and sauna. The bathroom was clean and the staff were very friendly. We will be back!

It was a peaceful and beautiful cabin out in the middle of nowhere. The beds were comfortable enough. It was nice they did have fitted sheets on top of the beds. The wood for the campfire was awesome to have. They brought us extra water and tp when we needed it. A little tricky to find but she responded immediately when we messaged. The road to the cabin could use a little maintenance like some pebbles to fill in the pot holes- we didn’t get stuck but we’re concerned a few times. We enjoyed our stay.

Amanda has an amazing and private piece of property. It was plenty quiet and road noice was basically nonexistent. We originally planned to test out a new 6 person tent (location has plenty of large, flat areas prime for tent pads), but a long thunderstorm really made us appreciate the onsite primitive cabin. There were only 2 of us (plus a dog), but the cabin was roomy enough for more. The bunk beds definitely were a comfortable change from tent sleeping pads. The outhouse was nice, clean, and maintained and the large mowed area allowed for all kinds of running around with a dog-type activities. Will definitely visit again- highly recommend!

Overview
About
With forested hills and crystal waters as far as the eye can see, Voyageurs National Park offers 218,000 acres to explore on land and water. Straddling the border between northern Minnesota and Canada, this remote park is a place to immerse yourself in the natural world, with few reminders of civilization. Campers will find both frontcountry campsites, with minimal development, and backcountry camping, which requires a hike to reach. RVing and car camping are not possible since a boat is required to reach these campsite locations.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for a classic tent-camping trip: The frontcountry campsites at Voyageurs National Park are easier to reach, while still providing a natural retreat.
- Best for adventure: The remote backcountry campsites at Voyageurs National Park are far removed from civilization.
- Best for amenities: For car campers and RVers, private RV parks offer camping, mainly along the shores of Kabetogama Lake and the Ash River.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Campers should first decide whether they want to camp in the frontcountry or backcountry.
- Frontcountry campsites are for tent camping only and may include a picnic table, tent pad, and fire ring.
- Backcountry campsites require backpacking for miles to reach them. Plan accordingly.
- Campsite reservations are released in a block on the first day of each month for several months in advance on the Recreation.gov website.
- Recreation.gov will help you plan your camping trip by listing details about how to reach each campsite and what amenities are available.
- Some backcountry campsites also have canoe rentals that can be booked to explore the interior lakes.
When to go
Though Voyageurs National Park is open year-round, the waterways may be frozen much of the year due to its northern location. June through September generally offer warmer temperatures and rippling waters. Highs generally reach the 60s and 70s, dropping to lows in the 40s and 50s overnight. Winter brings conditions that require extra preparation. Snow and freezing temperatures, dropping below zero, may be regularly encountered October through February. Winter campers can reach campsites on foot or snowmobile when the ice and snowpack are thick enough. Winter offers the best chance to see the northern lights.
Know before you go
- Campers must properly store food to avoid attracting bears.
- A number of outfitters offer houseboat rentals for a unique way to explore this park.
- Campers are allowed to park their vehicles for free overnight at the visitor centers.
- The visitor centers offer boat launches; if traveling without your own watercraft, water taxis are also available.

We had a great time at the park! Highly recommend renting a boat to explore more. We rented a small fishing boat and were able to explore part of a lake for the day. It’s definitely required to experience the park. We also visited during Labor Day when the park hosts their Star Party which was so much fun and included free canoe trips and s’mores!

Unfortunately I didn't plan ahead and book one of the boat tours that were offered. They were all sold out during the time I was visiting the area. I'm sure that would have enhanced my experience at Voyageurs. However, I did enjoy the Kabetogama Visitor Center and watched the short film. The rangers were very nice and helpful as they made sure I was on a wait list for a boat tour; sadly, no spots opened up for me.

Even without a boat, the park was still lovely! Plenty of hiking trails and fun opportunities for the 50th anniversary.

Exploring Minnesota’s Own Voyageurs NP
Definitely underrated. As Minnesota’s only NP, of course I’m partial to this one. Mostly comprised of water, expect to enjoy the pretty lakes and rivers here. We like to go fishing here, and hike around a bit. It’s also one of the free NPs, so some people may find that to be a draw.

In my opinion, the most amazing and awe-inspiring NP in the lower 48 states, and one of the most majestic places on Earth. I have been 4x, including hiking down, staying overnight, and hiking out. I STRONGLY recommend doing so. Savor the experience of descending down through millions of years of rock, and then splash around or whitewater raft the Colorado. Mind - blowing views at sunrise and sunset.
