Taste of Old Florida

13 sites · RVs, Tents10 acres · Palm City, FL
A small but unique piece of land that was given to a family in the 1920s by the Florida Railroad Company. It stayed in the family until we purchased it. It is unique because the surrounding area does not have much tree coverage. This is due to the ground underneath, which is a vein of grey marl. This is why the area is called the Allapattah (an Indian word for Alligator) Flats. We are hoping that our county stays the way it is so people will know what Old Florida really looks like. Minutes from I-95, but surrounded by the Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management Preserve. Located on Martin Hwy, which was recently designated as a Florida Scenic Hwy. Fifteen minutes to Stuart and thirty minutes to West Palm Beach, a world away from the hustle and bustle. We realize that people also love Florida for Disney and tropical paradises but if that is what you want than this may not be your kind of place.

Twin Oaks Garden Retreat

1 site · RV1 acre · Sebastian, FL
Located just 5 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, this hideaway is nestled into a cozy neighborhood under twin oaks and a mango tree. A taste of the “old Florida,” this neighborhood has untouched biodiversity complete with lots of yummy fruit trees, 100 year old buildings, and an artesian well (which your hosts have turned into a glorious, 70 degree bath tub). Hang your hammocks, lay out in the sun or moonlight, take a walk under the stars as the neighbor owls hoot, light an open fire and stay tucked away somewhere so close to the world, yet seemingly so remote. Cruise over to the beach for a surf lesson or to the river for a paddle boarding adventure (lessons and/or board rentals available). For RV and Van life folks we’ve got a 30 amp power plug (requires an extension cord) and city water hook up (BYO hose). Bring your furry friends. Our yard is not fenced so we ask that unless you have your own fence, you keep them on a leash and out of the garden! For a fee we will allow dumping in our septic tank *ask about availability and accessibility*. We offer a complete camp site, without the hassle of nosy RV neighbors. The Home on the property is an old concrete block Florida beauty built in the 40s, used by your hosts as the perfect sanctuary for yoga and massage. Sophia (your host) is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Yoga Instructor, and owns Sophlow Yoga, a Local Yoga Studio and Surf School. She loves gardening, and has a complete apothecary of herbs, salves and tinctures for your daily needs. Both she and her boyfriend are Native Floridians, and are more than happy to share local knowledge of their home town of Wabasso Beach. Marshall (your other host & Sophia’s other half) is an avid waterman. He is a Sailboat Captain, happy to take you cruising on the open sea or fishing for local catch, as well as a Master Carpenter with experience in plumbing, electric and mechanical handy work. He specializes in renovating small spaces such as sailboats and RVs with his attention to detail and meticulous woodwork, so you can leave not only rejuvenated, but renovated! Both of your hosts hope to give you the vacation experience of your dreams, and will support with any services they can, or by simply leaving you in peace.

The best camping near Avalon State Park guide

Overview

About

For those dreaming of a beachside retreat, camping near Avalon State Park is the perfect choice. Boasting over a mile of pristine, undeveloped beachfront, Avalon stands as a sanctuary for numerous wildlife species. The park's sandy shores are especially significant for threatened and endangered sea turtles, including the loggerhead, Atlantic green, and leatherback, which choose this serene spot for nesting during spring and summer.

While the park's dune crossovers protect its delicate ecosystem, they also provide access to a myriad of recreational activities. From swimming and snorkeling to angling and sunbathing, Avalon State Park is a camper's paradise. However, swimmers and snorkelers should exercise caution due to remnants of underwater obstacles from World War II amphibious exercises. After a day of beach fun, visitors can relish a delightful meal at the sheltered picnic tables, all while enjoying panoramic views of the ocean.

An Avalon State Park camping trip offers a blend of beach recreation and wildlife observation, making it an ideal destination for campers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

When to go

The best time to visit Avalon State Park is during spring and fall when the weather is mild and the park is less crowded. Summer months bring nesting sea turtles but also Florida's heat and humidity. Hurricanes may affect the park from June to November, so check weather advisories before planning your trip.

Know before you go

  • Swim with caution due to underwater WWII obstacles still present off the coast.
  • Accessible amenities are available, including beach wheelchairs upon request.
  • No lifeguards on duty; all water activities are at your own risk.
  • Observe all fishing regulations and ensure you have the necessary license.
  • Stay hydrated and eco-friendly by using the refillable water bottle station at the bathhouse.
