Maddara.Organic.Farm.and.Art

9 units · Glamping, Motorhomes, Tents120 acres · Yass River, NSW
Once a much larger property, we purchased our 120-acre (50-hectare) in 1984 as a means to live sustainably and raise a family. Living in our shed whilst we prepared the garden, put in watering infrastructure and built our house which we finally moved in when our daughter was 6 months old in 1990. Over the ensuing years we have continued to increase biodiversity on the property and set it up so we can live sustainably, harvesting our own water, electricity and food. If your lucky you could get a hamper of our product when there is sufficient in season. With the increased biodiversity you will find that in the mornings and evenings kangaroos and wallabies will visit with the occasional echidna, rabbit and hare; and to forget the large array of bird life - that may wake you early in the morning with the songs. This campsite is set on lovely grassy open areas interspersed with gum trees. The sunrise looks spectacular near the dam, when the trees give off a lovely glow. The main paddock has a Geodome, a shared space for relaxing in. With all that space you can park and set up camp anywhere in the paddock. There is access to drinking water, toilets, and a hot shower. Around the dome is a firepit, drinking water and a camp kitchen. The firepit features an Argentinian BBQ and a plate for cooking. The kitchen has plates, cups, cutlery, and other bits and pieces for you to use. We also allow for your pets to stay onsite, this also includes horses. If you want exclusive use of the paddocks - refer to Group Bush Retreat.

Michelago Farm Camping

Large open paddock with easy access from Monaro Highway, great for camping with amazing views of the mountains. The access road is dirt road. Ok for caravans. Dog friendly (must be well behaved around our animals and not chase them). We have Alpacas & Donkeys in our paddock near the camp area so your dog must be kept under control at all times (Donkeys hate dogs!). We have a composting toilet available for campers to use. Mobile phone reception in the area is around 3-4 bars 4G on Optus and 3-4 bars 3G on Telstra. There is no access to the rivers or creeks near our property in Michelago as all land along the waterways in Michelago is private property. The closest public access to the river is at Angle Crossing or Bredbo (just ask and I can give you a map) Please bring your own wood for camp fires or you can purchase a barrow of bush wood from us in the extras. We prefer you not to collect your own wood (other than starter sticks/branches) as we are trying to maintain logs, branches, ground cover on the ground for native birds, lizards, etc. All camp fees are being used to rehabilitate our property with plants that are native to our area and restore the land.

The best camping near Namadgi National Park guide

Overview

About

Parks and reserves make up more than half of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and Namadgi is the largest of them. Nearby Canberra, defies most preconceptions of what a capital city looks like, and its proximity to the mountains and bush of the Namadgi National Park is another pleasant surprise for campers wanting to escape the city. Three campsites can be found within the park, while many others dot the area just outside. All three can be accessed by vehicle, and walkers in the park are allowed to wild camp in many areas. It’s easy to see why Namadgi is a favourite getaway for Canberrans.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for groups: Honeysuckle Campground has space for small and large groups.
  • Best for vehicles: Orroral Campground is suitable for caravans and trailers.
  • Best for families: Cotter Campground, just outside the park, is well-equipped.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. All campsites within the park require a reservation, and fees apply. Some campgrounds have maximum stay limits that make them inappropriate for long stays.
  2. Bookings can be made online, via the ACT Park and Conservation Service website. You can book online for tent camping and for up to four caravans or camper trailers.
  3. Larger groups may need a permit to camp in Namadgi and should apply to the ACT Government online. This should be done at least 28 days in advance of your intended stay. Very large groups need a lead time of 6 months or more.

When to go

The ACT experiences very hot, dry summers and cold winters, with frost and even snow not uncommon in the mountains. Summer brings a high risk of bushfires, which can start and spread very quickly. Most campers will find the conditions most comfortable for camping and hiking in spring and autumn, when daytime temperatures will be warm but not too hot.

Know before you go

  • Although wild backpack camping is allowed in most parts of the park, the exception is in the lower and middle portions of the Cotter Catchment area of the park’s northwest.
  • Wild camping is allowed in the upper Cotter Catchment area, but you’ll need a permit.
  • Generators aren’t allowed at the campgrounds and firewood is not supplied. Firewood can be bought from the Namadgi Visitor Centre.
  • Dogs aren’t permitted at the campground within the national park boundaries, but there are dog-friendly campgrounds in a few places right next to the park.
  • The Honeysuckle and Orroral campgrounds contain composting or pit toilets that are wheelchair accessible.
  • There are some huts within the park, but these are for emergency use only and campers shouldn’t plan to spend the night in them.
