If you fancy giving hammock camping a go but don’t want to invest in the gear, this site in Mid Wales is the one for you. It’s a fantastic way to try wild camping in hammocks without actually going wild and without even owning hammocks. You simply book your stay, pack warm clothes, and plan your campfire dinners – then turn up ready to embrace the outdoors. Host, Chris, will set you off in the right direction. And the direction for Wild Hammock Camping is into the trees of a secluded, private woodland with a brook running through it. He’ll give you the hammocks, he'll provide the firewood and drinking water and then, he’ll leave you to enjoy your own private wild camp for the weekend.
The idea is that you sling your hammocks between the trees, you make your campfire and you embrace the wild. There’s no WiFi or phone signal here. The place is truly off grid and it won’t be for everybody but if you want to have a go at wild-ish camping, this is about as good as it gets. All the basics are covered (it has a compost loo) and you have the place entirely to yourself. Up to six can stay here and it works as well for an outdoorsy family whose kids who’ll enjoy playing in the stream as it does for groups of grown-up friends who want to catch up around the campfire. Everyone will enjoy the novelty of sleeping in a hammock. And, perhaps, even seasoned hammock campers will embrace the beauty of the site and the handy facilities.
This campsite may feel “out there” but in truth you are a five-minute drive from the nearest pub. The closest town is Knighton on the English-Welsh border and Llandrindod Wells is another a bit further away. It’s a Victorian spa town with independent shops and cafes and it’s about half an hour’s drive from here. But you don’t come to a place like this to experience all that. You come to get away from it all and enjoy the trees, the birdsong, the babbling brook and the campfire.
The hammocks are hired out and the guests are welcome to hang the camping hammocks on trees where they like in the woods (although there is a main area we’ve cleared with a few seats around a campfire that we feel is suitable for larger groups). There are a couple of country pubs a few miles down the road and also the supermarkets and takeaways are about 20 mins away
