A shepherd’s hut on a smallholding on the edge of the Clwydian Range

Sitting at the top of a sloping meadow on a smallholding, The Hut at Hafod Las offers lovely countryside views on the edge of the Clwydian Range. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and from here on the hillside, you can well believe it. The view is green, the sounds are birdsong, church bells, and the baas of sheep. It’s pure countryside bliss. And though you feel totally secluded here, those bells are a clue that there’s a little civilisation nearby. Rather handily, that includes a welcoming local pub, just five minutes’ walk away.

While dinner at The Tyn-Y-Capel is recommended, heading there is not a necessity as the hut is well equipped for a self-catering stay. It’s designed as a bolthole for two with a double bed, a kitchenette, a table and chairs, a log burner and its own shower and loo. It’s all under the classically-shaped curvy roof of this traditional-looking shepherd’s hut, which also has a fire pit and outdoor seating. Rather appropriately, the meadow that surrounds it is often grazed by sheep and the interior has a few nods to them too. There are sheep in the curtains, on the cushions and on the walls. Even the duvet on the bed, which doubles up as a sofa, is made of pure sheep’s wool.

This location on the edge of the village of Minerva sits a few miles outside Wrexham and is linked to it via the Clywedog Trail, a riverside walking route. It’s one of the places you might like to visit while you’re here—but there’s an abundance of those. The location is as good for hikers as it is for bikers who’ll be headed straight for the MTB trails of the Llandegla Forest a couple of miles up the road. And, with grand houses, castles and a World Heritage Site at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct all within 10 miles, it’s as good for sightseers as it is for those who want to do nothing at all. Both seem like good options here at Hafod Las.

Relax in our quirky shepherds hut. Set in its own private meadow the Hut has everything you need to escape the world for a while!Inside the Hut you'll find a sofa that converts into a comfy double bed. A kitchen area with hot and cold running water and a double induction hob. There's also a log burner, ensuite wet room with toilet and shower and a small dining area.Outside there's a fire pit, dining area and rocking chairs, perfect for relaxing and looking for shooting stars.Whether you want a relaxing holiday or something more exhilarating you're sure to find lots to do in the local area.

Secluded Shepherds Hut
We loved the Shepherds Hut! Very cosy and well thought out. We got unlucky with the weather so the wood-burner was very welcome.

A magical experience!
Staying at Helen's Hut was a magical experience!! The surroundings are pretty spectacular and it's truly peace and quiet like a little corner of heaven. You'd have everything you could possibly need and more in that beautiful little hut. And it's spacious enough for two for a romantic getaway. Helen's hospitality is outstanding. You'd even find hot chocolate and marshmallows on the shelf, on top of everything else she provided!! Better than a four star hotel we'd stayed in the past. Bedding, towels, toiletries... everything was there! Facilities great! Outside patio amazing! Can't praise enough...it was a truly memorable mini vacation for me and my husband. Thanks millions Helen!!

Wake up to the sound of bird song! The Hut at Hafod Las is set in it's own private meadow on our small farm in North Wales. There's so much to explore from the doorstep, from wild flower meadows to woodlands, castles, historic houses and museums. A perfect base for exploring North Wales or relax and get back to nature!
Nearby attractions

The Hut at Hafod Las is in a good position for heading out on countryside walks. It is less than half a mile to Minera Quarry Country Park where you can see the remains of a lead works and learn about the mine’s history in a (summer only) visitor centre. It also marks one end of a five-mile route, the Clywedog Trail which follows the route of the Clywedog River all the way into Wrexham. Part of it passes through the Erdigg Estate, a grand 17th-century house and gardens which is worth a visit even if you don’t fancy the walk. The National Trail, Offa’s Dyke Path, also passes relatively nearby and you can join it at Pen Y Stryt (five miles away). There are plenty more walking and cycling adventures within the Clwydian Range area of Outstanding Natural Beauty too. Llandegla Forest is just up the road and a good place for mountain biking with One Planet Adventure MTB shop providing bike hire, info and a cafe (four miles away). The World Heritage-listed Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is 10 miles south and the medieval Chirk Castle is a couple of miles further.

Food and drink

You can order breakfast hampers for your stay at Hafod Las directly from the hosts. These feature meat from local farms and eggs fresh off the smallholding for your stay. For a meal out, it’s almost as easy as The Tyn-Y-Capel is less than half-a-mile from the site and serves a good pub menu with Welsh produce used wherever possible. They also do great roasts on Sundays as well as afternoon teas. The closest shops are in Coedpoeth, just over a mile down the road, where there’s a Co-op and a Spar as well as a coffee shop and a couple of takeaways. For local produce, though, Swans Farm Shop is a great place to head for, six miles away, in Mold.
